Upgrading: Need to identify my bottleneck in the process.

Hey guys. Gonna write this off copied and pasted from the "How to ask for new build or upgrade advice" thread.

I built this computer about 2 years ago. And now it's just starting to see some issues with higher-end settings on current games at 1920x1080.

Thanks for your help!

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: Very soon.

Budget Range: Not including the monitor (no clue what it will retail for, yet), I nearly bought an EVGA GTX 780 3gb card from Amazon (prime baby) for $509.99 with a $10 rebate card. I could squeeze a bit more out of my budget if I had to.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing the web about games, hah.

Are you buying a monitor: In the very near future I'll be purchasing a 2560x1440 Asus IPS gsync (April release date supposedly).

Parts to Upgrade: I'm wanting a new video card, but don't want my CPU/Ram/Mobo to bottleneck it. I don't have a dedicated sound card, so I was looking at the Radeon video cards that have some new sound capability. It doesn't seem to be used that often (if at all, yet), though.

Do you need to buy OS: No.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: (e.g.: newegg.com, amazon.com. Anywhere else I don't already know about? tigerdirect.com always seems higher priced, but I haven't been there in a while.

Location: Nashville, TN

Parts Preferences: Intel/Nvidia. But I'm not opposed to buying an ATI video card.

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: Probably not, but my system board and case should be able to handle it.

Wanting to play the latest games at ultra 1920x1080, and have an easy upgrade to the new Asus low latency gsync IPS 2560x1440 screen thats coming out in April with no other out of pocket costs.

I'm experiencing some kernel crashes in my GTX 580 (I've tried volting it higher, but no bueno)

My current specs are:

Mobo: MSI-7681

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5gb vram

Ram: 8gb DDR3 (cpu-z says 800mhz single channel)

Unfortunately the lack of vram really limits my capabilities at the higher resolution I'm wanting.

And the GTX 580 is almost $700 right now at the only place I can find one (amazon.com).

Thank you, though!

So you wouldn't say that there are too many bottlenecks in my rig (if any) to prevent me from taking full advantage of the 780?

There isnt much difference between your current CPU and the newest I5 4670s, so honestly, no.

Sure you will get a few extra FPS on a new CPU, but it wont be noticeable.

Not only that, the peak power draw for the 780 is similar to that of your current 580.

Thanks. You're great! Considering my rig in it's current form, upgrading to the 780, will I be able to single card 2560x1440 easily at ultra settings for at least a year?

That all depends on how demanding the games are that come out. If I could anticipate that, I would be making a lot more money that I do now.

However, my best guess would be you will be playing ultra or VERY close to for a year yes. I plan to move up to one of those beautiful 27" gsync asus screens when they come out, or shortly afterwards, and I will be upgrading to either the 780 or the new maxwell cards.
