Hi
My system is 4 years old and recently i have been experiencing random shutdowns while using Windows. I checked the CPU temperatures and they were pretty high, 95-117 Celsius while idle on Windows and 86-90 Celsius on bios. On start-up the temperatures are around 76c but quickly rise up to the 95-100c range. I found that to be pretty strange considering that i have never overclocked the CPU.
The shutdowns are random considering that the PC may even shutdown even when it is on sleep-mode.
The CPU load is normal.
I checked the cooler(it's the one that came with the CPU) and it seems to be fine.
Truth be told i haven't applied any thermal paste since i built the system but i don't think that will solve the problem, but i am open for suggestions of course.
I experience no problems whatsoever while using Ubuntu.
Any advice or idea will be greatly appreciated.

System Specs
Windows 7 64x Ultimate SP1
Ubuntu 12 Lts Precise Pangoline
CPU: Amd Phenom II X4 965
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
Ram: 4gb DDR3 669,7 MHz
Graphics: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890

Your temperature values are extremely high. It might be a faulty sensor too but considering you are getting shutdowns then it's better to focus on cpu as a beginning. If you don't have any thermal compound between your cpu and the heatsink at the moment then you should apply thermal paste of course. It will greatly increase the heat transfer and reduce the temps around 30C at least.

Stock cooler + no paste = hughe fail especially on that CPU model where TDP 125/140W (depending on the revision).

1st of all buy some good thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 is just about right) and use it!

If you will still have the issues then next step is changing that stock cooler to something better, simple as that.
