Hi guys, i put up a post yesterday should i get the 780ti or the 290x well i think the 780ti is a bit out of my price range at the moment so I've decided to either go for the 780 or the 290x (twin force MSI)

MSI twin force 290x (£440)http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-msi-radeon-r9-290x-twin-frozr-iv-28nm-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-1040mhz-2816-streams-dport-dvi-hdmi

MSI twin force 780 (£377) http://www.scan.co.uk/products/3gb-msi-gtx-780-twin-frozr-gaming-28nm-pcie-30-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-889mhz-cores-2304-dport-dvi-hdmi

Or should I simply just wait ( I have GTX 560 currently)

I've never tried overclocking a GPU before but I'm willing to learn so keep overclocking in mind, will this be a game changer?

If you guys have any other GPU models to suggest please do tell.

the 780 is about as low as it is going to get in terms of price. I don't forsee huge performance gains with the 8xx series, as they are doing more for functionality and additional features rather than raw performance this time around from what i've heard. The 780, is much faster than the ps4 in terms of power, and will be just as powerful, or more, than even the next consoles.

so i'd expect a life span of 3-5 years of quality gaming with any of these high end cards
With those two prices, I can't recommend the 290x, as once you overclock your 780, you get pretty close in the performance. They are both a HUGE upgrade over the 560.

If you want a more affordable upgrade, the gtx 770 and 280x are fairly close in performance to each other, and will still play all modern games on ultra, just go for the cheaper of the two for these ones (if they are same price go for the 280x due to mantle performance increases)

So do i think, both of these are high in prices, (specially the 290x) is because of all this bitcoin mining stuff.
So yeah, go for a r9 280x. Overclock it too, they relatively cool with their aftermarket coolers. It will last you long. :)

The r9 290x is faster, in games like battlefield 4 there is almost a 10fps difference, but it varies from game to game.
And overclocking shouldn't shorten their lifespan to much if you know what you're doing. And by not much i mean like a month or so.

If you get your max stable overclock without touching voltages, as long as your airflow is good, you won't reduce the lifespan of the card and will get roughly the same performance as the 290x while still using less power and producing less heat. The 290x does not overclock well, as it is already pretty much maxed out due to temp limits and some other things. The card will last more than 2-3 years, just don't touch the voltages if you don't want to shorten the lifespan.

In short, overclocking 780= very beneficial and indeed a game changer (14-21% in some games)
overclocking 290x not so much (4-8%)

the 290x is not a bad card by any means, but the price makes it not worth it since it has gone up

between the 280x and the 770, get the cheaper one if there is a big price difference, as they are nearly identicle in performance, even after mantle drops the 280x will only be faster in mantle games like bf4 and thief, while being pretty much the same as the 770 in other games

I generally don't play FPS games on PC mainly because I suck XD. Is the 290x faster at both stock and with overclocked? If i only need to overclock the 780 by a little to get it on par with the 290x i have no issue with that due to it being much cheaper.

And considering the price difference, there is no way i can recommend the 290x for you over the 780. were they the same price, then indeed i would recommend the 290x. (at release they were actually cheaper, then nvidia dropped prices to be about equal, but the mining craze has made it go way up)

Cool looks like i'll get the 780 if i indeed choose to get a new GPU. Any idea if i should wait a little longer for the 8xx to come out? Or is there any real point as the 780 will do me well for the next 2-3 years
