What is the best cooling solution for a r9 290x card to maximize performance?

I'm looking into getting an r9 290x card and i've heard that they don't always perform to their capabilities because they aren't running cool enough. I want to maximize my performance with this card and was wondering what cooling options were the best.

Ok, if you are in an area where the price increase is in effect, I CAN happily suggest the nvidia cards, as the price increase for the amd cards really hit their value.

the 780ti is faster than the 290x plain and simple while producing less heat and consuming a little less power.

the 780 can be overclocked to match the 290x in some games (at 1080p, as the 290x admittedly does very well at higher than 1080p resolutions).

if you can wait, then wait. If you were buying today, i would recommend the nvidia side purely due to the stupid price increase of the amd side.

don't expect pricing to change on the amd cards anytime soon, as they JUST released these new ones a few months ago, and the mining craze is still in its infancy (doesnt...
g10 kraken is a great watercooling option for the card. Also almost any of the aftermarket coolers are good (except the asus one. It seems to fall short for the 290x).

You will however, find that apparently it is not the thermal limit that is stopping the 290x in some cases (except for the throttling due to temps...that was 100% the poor performance of the stock cooler). The card, according to most reviewers, simply does not overclock well, as it seems amd has already pushed close to the max performance out of the chip. This varies from person to person of course due to the silicon lottery. Some overclock like champs, and some simply don't. the performance is great on the card, and if you can keep the temps under control, you won't run into thermal throttling.

also with aftermarket coolers, remember you will be throwing a LOT of heat into your case, and so your CPU temp WILL suffer by a a few degrees because of it.

I am by no means trying to recommend another card though, as i'm sure you are choosing the best performing card for your budget, and the 290x, if it hasnt been affected by the price increase due to mining, is easily the best deal out there for a flagship gaming card

I have looked at other graphics card solutions for my budget and I could go with a 780 Ti if I wanted too i've just seen that the r9 290x isnt that bad of a card for cheaper. It has gone up in price due to mining from around $550 to now in the $650-$700 range. I do have some time to wait before I can purchase the build i'm looking into so between now and this august or a bit later I can wait to see if better solutions come out or certain prices changing. I've been looking around and I managed to find the Kryographics Hawaii Radeon R9 290 waterblock. Though I am not experienced with watercooling enough to know if this setup would require a custom watercooling solution or if it could be hooked up to a closed loop watercooler.

the nvidia cards also recently underwent a price drop, so don't expect them to come lower any time soon either

august-november is when the new flagships should be coming out, but i wouldn't expect a super mega increase in performance. not to mention they will not be cheap

my personal hope is that amd decides to make mining dedicated cards, and then releases some really killer gaming cards. this would be the smartest move, as they would increase their consumer market by quite a lot.

nvidia is kinda meh, they can keep doing what they are doing as they for the last 2 generations have held the flagship single chip (titan vs 7970, 780ti vs 290x) but their stuff is so expensive that it hurts
