Need Gigabit Switch Recommendation

I have just completed wiring my new house and home office with CAT6 and I'm looking for recommendations for gigabit switches. There are 36 CAT6 drops spread out around the house and the office, and now I need to get a 48-port switch or 2 24-port switches.

I'm thinking that 2 24-port switches would be fine, and run cooler and more quietly than a 48-port switch.

I don't think I need anything overly complicated...just stable, reliable devices. I'm thinking of 2 Cisco SG100-24-NA or Cisco SG102-24-NA devices. These seem to get good reviews and are reasonably priced.

Any thoughts on either, or any other recommendations?

Am I correct that I can run a standard patch cable from one switch to the other to connect them?

Thanks in advance!

Those are as likely as good as any others. Unmanaged switches do not vary a lot from vendor to vendor. Key number to always watch for is that the forwarding rate is 2 x no ports in g. This devices is 48g so it is nonblocking.

I would use 2 switches as you propose since it is generally cheaper when you look at 24 vs 48. You also do not go completely down if one would fail.

The downside is now machines on 1 switch must share a 1g connection to talk to machines on the second switch. With a 48 port switch that has 96g forwarding rate all ports could run 1g at same time. In a home environment this is seldom a concern but it is really the only downside to using 2 switches rather than 1.
