Hey guys so i picked up an 8320 i have an aftermarket heatsink on it but its nothing to special big heatsink with 80mm fan i think it is. Obviously could use a better one but its better than the stock one for sure. Anyway I idle at about 27c. I use hwmonitor it shows the package at 27c and i used core temp to verify it. Both show the same temps.

I turned turbo boost and all those other settings in bios off so its sits at stock 3.5ghz constant with 1.28v

Now when i run prime95 to stress test it my temps skyrocket from 27 to almost 70c. I dont understand why or how that even happens. Also the voltage drops from 1.28v to like 1.20v or around that area when under load running prime. Is the voltage drop normal ?and any tips on why this cpu runs so damn hott? Only thing i can think of is getting a better heatsink.

Thanks hopefully u guys can help me. I looked at some other threads and seems like im not the only one with the cpu running hot.

stress tests are supposed to take your system to the limits so heating up isn't exactly peculiar, but your temperatures are a bit high though, since the thermal limit on FX chips are about mid 70's I believe.

If the voltage is dropping then I'm suspecting a bad voltage regulator on your motherboard, what's the brand and model?

As for CPU temps themselves, a better heatsink certainly wouldn't hurt, since the stocks usually suck. New thermal paste is also an option

Stress tests will always increase your temperatures, 70C isn't unusual on a stock cooler. I'd get an aftermarket solution.

As for the voltage drop I believe that happens on all FX chips under load, it certainly did on my FX 6200 and FX 8320 unless you have LLC enabled.

Well the problem is its not a stock cooler, its twice the size of a stock cooler with 80mm fan. So im sure it cools alot better than stock one but Im saying I could always get a better one but to me it seems like this one should do the job fine.

Mobo is asus m5a78l-m lx plus - its so so but its what this computer had and since it supports 125w and fx processors I bought one and slapped it in :) As for the paste i use thermaltake tg-2.

So what is LLC and should i have it on or off ?

Also what bothers me is that the temps dont really climb they jump. Il idle at 22-27c then I start doing something and itl jump to 35-40c. As for prime Il idle at 22-27 I run prime for like 2min and it hits 60-70 right away I dont even run it for 10 min cuz i have a feeling the temp wont stop climbing. kinda weird in my opinion never seen a cpu do that before.

That's happened with every CPU I've ever owned huntsman. The sudden onset of load from p95 results in the spike in temps. You could try cleaning the heatsink of dust, cleaning and reapplying paste or getting a new 120mm heatsink.

I would only advise having LLC on if you're overclocking, and even then it's not necessary.

I just looked at LLC and Its set on auto other than that it has diff % i can change it to. Dont have a disable option so just going to leave it auto i guess. Alright just wanted to make sure im not alone on those temp spikes. I just tried playing a game and my pc turned off. :/

oh and found the heatsink i have dont remember the model but this is it http://images.highspeedbackbone.net/skuimages/large/ULT33186-main.jpg

I also have 3 fans in my case. 120mm front intake fan, 140mm side fan which currently is intake, and 120mm exhaust fan, I might change the side fan to be exhaust and see if that changes anything.

Other than that im puzzled as to whats up with this

So i disabled LLC 0% means its off got that done. Now i tried playing the same game and my pc just turns off and I have to turn the psu off and then back on to turn the pc on. Im guessing this psu does not have enough juice esp since i kinda hear the fans slow down a bit when i start a game which is weird. I think its only a 450w or 500w. What do you guys think?

I dont think its too old but its all custom build just happen that the mobo is eh and so is the psu in my opinion because it was a bundle I believe. Here is everything i got:

cpu - fx8320
gpu - r9 270 2gb
ram- 8gb ddr3 1600mhz
mobo - asus m5a78l-m lx plus
hd- 1tb wd I think

I really think its the psu because it shuts off right away before i get a chance to even play the game. I will try a diff game and see what happens. Wish i had a spare laying around to test this.

Since it idles just fine i can search the web and all but as soon as i start a game it turns off.

old processor was a dual core phenom 2 x2 550 3.1ghz which is a 80w and i had that paired with hd6850 which uses 2 6pin power connectors. It all ran fine. Now the r9 270 has lower power consumption from what i remember and only uses 1 6pin connector. So in theory it should run just fine, not sure why it turns off other than not enough power.

Whats your conclusion on this ? I think i had this happen to me before on one of my other builds and it ended up being the psu but i cant remember for sure.

I also find it awkward that the cpu temp fluctuates that much. I sometimes idle at 22-27c, then il open my browser and go back to idle and all of the sudden il be in mid 40s, at one point i was doing nothing just watching the temp and it climbed to 60-65c on idle. Somethings effed up with this cpu, theres no way my heatsink does not cool it. The temps vary and fluctuate so much and so fast that it makes no sense.

Add better aftermarket cooler. I have the same CPU and stressing with Prime95 i get 62º C. When i play games it never goes more than 50º C. Maybe u need better PSU also, get some 600w bronze 80+ its gonna be fine.

alright so got a new psu that fixed my game crashing problem :) it runs good now. Temp problems still got it, I will try and reapply the damn paste again and see whats up. I got on rust to try and see if it would load and play it works but I was in the game for like 2 min and i would alt tab to check my temps on cpu it got up to 72c -__- if reapplying the paste does not work than i guess i might need a new cooler but im just surprised that it gets that hot.

Good spot! Hadn't even noticed that. However it wouldn't cause the CPU to be hotter than it normally is. The board officially supports the CPU, but shouldn't overclock with it.

idk if I've already suggested this, but try updating the BIOS.

Went out bought a thermaltake nic f4 cooler, that did the job. Im still amazed at how the old did not cool it at all. My idle temps are 15-18c and on load max i hit was 40c.

Thanks everyone
