Can I boot Windows 8.1 from an external multi-card reader?

This is my first post here, so here goes. I'm currently snowed in and unable to go buy any DVDs or flash drives right now, and I need to create a bootable drive loaded with a Windows 8.1 ISO.
I discovered I'm all out of blank DVDs and my flashdrive is currently in the hands of someone else, and I'm trying to install Windows 8.1 on my PC. I figured I could put a 16 GB micro SD in an external card reader and my computer would read it as a flash drive (which it does). So I extracted the contents of the .ISO onto my SD card (fat32) and rebooted, selected USB multiple card reader from the BBS popup window (I think that's what it's called, may be wrong) and I'm met with a little blinking line on the top left of the screen and nothing else happens...... did I do something wrong with the .ISO or is my PC having trouble reading the SD card as bootable? Thanks in advance for any help guys!

Hi

How did you put the ISO onto the SD card
If you used Windows Explorer to copy it that does not work

There is a Microsoft program which puts a Windows ISO onto a USB memory stick and makes this bootable

I am not sure if there is a Windows 7 and Windows 8 version or not but this guide says the W 7 program works with W8

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/a/install-windows-8-usb.htm
or
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/3493290/create-bootable-windows-81-installation-media/

then use the Boot device selection menu if that exists on your PC, if not set boot device in BIOS or UEFI
