I have an old laptop, with a 500gb hdd. I've backed it up just incase, and I want to install both ubuntu and ye old steam os on the remaining space. My question is, how do I shrink the win7 partition so that I can have free space on the hdd for the new partitions, without losing any data? Thanks for any help!

Solution
control panel, admin. tools, computer management, disk management. right click on partition to shrink and select shrink volume. select how much you want to shrink it and hit ok. it will do the rest.

how much it can be shrunk will depend on how much is on the drive and where the data is located(note it could help if you cant shrink it enough to run windows defrag to condense the data.)

after you do this and question is solved please select best answer. your welcome

(note there should be no data loss as I have done this plenty of times no issues but thumbs up for running a backup and if you ever uninstall Linux and want to give windows the free space back just use the expand feature)

I have an hp laptop, and it came with this hp partition. would it be safe to delete it? or should I just leave it alone? The partition is tiny, less than a gb a think

it usully conatains files for bios updates and hp updates, hp diagonistic tools(the ones that it offers a boot up time). because hp doesn't do updates for mine I removed it on mine(I made sure to copy the files on it to a backup folder on my main partition in case I ever need them I can create the partition again and put the files back on it, just note the size of the partition if ints fat32 or ntfs and the name of the partition, I created a txt file so I don't have to remember it so you can put the files back) it just depends if you really need that space or not
