is also a sli mb.
on the newer mb the low end ones read the video slot speeds. the cheap mb will have one pci 3.0 slot running at 16x speed and the other will be a 4x speed. for a sli mb it has to be 16x for one card and 8x 8x with two gpus.
also with sli rig make sure your using a good 850w power supply.

So if i just wanted one card and not worry about sli, i should be good with a motherboard with a pci-e x16 slot and not worry about it having 2?

I'll make this short and quick, It runs best if you have two x16 PCI-E slots for the card, so I am going to recommend this board as it has very very good reviews and performance. ASRock Z87 Killer, Not only looks good, it performs extremely well and is very reliable and a trusted supplier.

Dear,

You want a mobo that has the capability of SLI even if not now but in future. Here are your three options (I don't know what and how much do you mean by CHEAP mobo):

Asus Z87 Plus

Asus Gryphon Z87

ASRock Fatal1ty Z87 Killer

There could be endless list out of available options. In MHO you should be considering ASRock mobo because in this price range this mobo is definitely beast, giving you good quality audio, LAN, OC Capability of reaching 3000MHz for RAM, 3 x PCIe 3.0 x 16 slots with good configuration for SLI/Cross Fire.

If I were you, I would have increased the budget and go for Asus Maximus VI Hero. you will not be disappointed. But within your budget range above three models will suffice.

PS: If you have intention for SLI now will be a good time to upgrade your PSU as well because you'll need 800W+ PSU with efficiency of 85% and above.

Good luck and Happy Hunting!
