Black screen backlight shut down

Having problems with my Windows XP laptop, repeatedly showing a black screen (with backlight) and forcing me to power it off and back on. I've tried leaving it with the black screen but it just stays like it and doesn't return to normal. This seems to happen at random intervals, sometimes the laptop goes 4 hours without it happening, other times it'll happen 4 times in one hour.

This is NOT an overheating problem. My laptop vents are clear, fans are working correctly and my CPU temp is at max 236C according to Core Temp, although it seems to be averaging at about 29-31C now.

This is also not a power problem, it happens whether plugged in or on battery.

ANY ideas please? This is driving me insane!

Hi, no, I don't know how to explain, when this happens the screen is black but not black as it would be if the laptop was off... there is some light there. I don't think it's a problem with the screen myself because there's seemingly nothing that triggers this. Is there a way I could check the connections on the screen? Is there a guide on how to do this somewhere?

Thanks!

What you can do, check with an external monitor, that way you will eliminate the GPU if the external monitor screen is alright. With the make and model, on youtube you may have a disassembly of the screen, you have to look. If you look at the screen at an angle, can you see a faint picture, if yes, maybe the inverter is defective or the backlight itself.

Next time this happens I will try and see if I can see the faint picture you speak of, but I'm pretty sure it's a blank screen with a slight backlight.

I don't have an external monitor to hand but if the problem persists and you think that could resolve it I will get one.
