I am thinking of upgrading my GPU to GTX 780 hoping to be able to play Battlefield 4 on high settings at 2560*1440.

Is the GPU upgrade enough
or should i add more than 6gb of ram?

If not how should i go around upgrading. Buy 3 more 2gb sticks or swap them for 3*4gb?

Current system: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R, Intel Core i7 950@3GHz, Mushkin Blackline 6GB 1600MHz, Antec CP-850, PNY GTX 470.
Also would it help to overclock my cpu?

Solution
BF3 and BF4 are set to utilize 3 cores. As far as your GPU is fine enough the CPU can factor much so overclocking is recommended as soon as you see its not working well enough. From personal experience i know 4GB ram is unacceptable (fps drops due to swap file usage), 6GB will be on the edge and 8GB will be just about right for HIGH-ULTRA setup.

As Ra_V_en said if you can then 8gb would best
I don't think you need to upgrade your gpu, it's just fine.

Thank you for the answer, so more ram it is. Is it okey to add more ram from another brand if the timings and speed is the same, since i can no longer find the exact same model.

I don't have any experience with triple channel ram, to be safe id pick the same speed at least. With timings it can be a bit more difficult to find, but in a case somehow new ram don't work with the old one you can always return it and try other solution.

Try searching the memory here:
http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_ga-x58a-ud3r.pdf

Or simply ask the supplier before you buy it.

Edit:
Heres some news about triple vs dual channel performance:
Link

After a bit of thinking now I'm convinced you should try to match speed+timings and possibly the chip producer (not a ram supplier).
Even if you will fail to have all 6 sticks in triple channel mode there will almost certainly be possible to have 3 pairs in dual channel.
If the speeds will vary much then I doubt you can match lets say 2xMushkin, 1xMushkin+1Other Vendor, 2xOther vendor as a 3 pairs, rather max 2xMushkin + 2xOther vendor, if you know what i mean.

Thank you so much this has explained a lot for me. I didn't know I could run it in dual channel with my CPU/Mobo
and clearly I know way to little about this stuff.

What about mixing GB size, so know I'm considering buying either 4x2GB pack and run it in 3 * 2 channel mode (2xmuhskin 2xother 2xother)

or if it's okey to have mixed size then 2x4GB pack and run it "2x2GB mushkin" and "2x4GB other" and leave out the single 2gb card.
Which option is most likely to work properly.
(I will of cource try to match the timing, latency and speed)

Third option is to try to find 3x4GB and just try to sell my current RAM. maybe this is the best option?

I will be buying it in another country since it will save me around 50%, so I wont be able to return it. If I end up with the ram's not working properly together then I will at least end up with a new set of 8GB ram total.

My GPU can just barely handle BF4 on medium at 1920*1080 so trying to run it at 2560*1440 on high or ultra is something I haven't tried yet. but i guess i would get maybe 15 fps.

Edit: Did a little benchmark. FRAPS Avg: 27.301 - Min: 15 - Max: 36 at 2560x1440 high settings on my current setup.
Also used memory got pretty close to its limit so that would definitely bottleneck it some if I would upgrade my GPU without more RAM.

@ UP GTX 780 is not just a random GPU card its a damn beast, so as far as CPU and RAM wont limit it, it will be very pleased to show some skills ;)

About the ram comaptibility, as stated at the RAM comaptibility chart (from Gigabyte) 3 channels can be problematic with different ram, dual channel very less likelly. I've personally tested way different Ram sticks, brand, speed, all different and after few tweaks and using common denominator (manually set timings from the slowest stick), it magically worked in dual channel mode.
If for some reason it wont in dual channel, it will be in single channel, but i guess this one wont be a good option.

Yes if you buy +2 other vendor, you will hit 8GB with very high probability working in dual channel.
It even probably be possible to use all 5 but only in single channel mode.
The best would be to borrow from someone a 1 stick the same size (2GB) and mix it with those 3 you have already. You would have answer where it will end up.

Btw read page 16 from the users guide:

Link

It tells a bit about possible combinations.

And about the GTX780 @ 2560x1440:

As you can see it will be fine as far as the CPU is not getting sucked to death, this guy had that i7 at 4,5Ghz ...sic.

Thanks for all the advice you've been amaziningly helpful.
I will buy a set of 4gb sticks (or 3 pack if I find it) and just see how it goes. Can't wait to get my hands on that GTX780 so i can finally crank those settings up at 1440p. nice video btw, gives me a lot better image of what to expect.

Thank's ;)

Of course GTX 780 is a beast card, but I don't think it will allow you to run BF4 on ultra on 1440p resolution.
Here are benchrmarks to see how it performs on that resolution:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2013/11/27/battlefield-4-performance-analysis/3

As you see here 780 gets minimal fps on 1080p 49 fps, while average fps is 65 & this is on 1080p!

Now looking at this: http://media.bestofmicro.com/Y/U/404310/original/Ultra-2560.png

Yes, there is no 780 in benchmarks, but there is GTX Titan which is slightly better than 780 & on 1440p it gets minimal 37 fps, while average is 47.

So my suggestion is, if you want to play on 1440p resolution heavy intensive games on ultra, you should get 2 780's or 770s & about RAM... Well I'm not sure about it, if 6gb will be enough or not, but if I were you, I'd get 8GB instead of 6GB to be sure RAM won't bottleneck.

I'm not interested in having everything maxed out. High with no anti-aliasing @ 1440p will be good enough for me.
This card should handle that with ease, am i right?
And I am going to have at least 8GB ram.

Do you think GTX 770 2GB in SLI would be a better option?

GTX 770 SLI beats GTX 780 in performance, but keep in mind, not all games support SLI, also power consumption will be twice more. Despite the fact, that 770 SLI will have better performance, I'd recommend you 780, because, you will have an option in the future to get another 780 when it gets outdated & sli of 780 will better than sli of 770.
