So my friend has a newly built gaming rig, and he was playing a game online. When it ended, his computer got an orange screen of death (?). We gave him a fresh install of Windows, and everything seemed to be going well.

Then we installed the Nvidia GPU drivers for his Asus Geforce 650 ti, and it won't get past "Starting Windows". It just kept restarting. I noticed it also took forever to start up Windows even when the drivers weren't installed. (It will start when the drivers are deleted.)

Today I tried swapping the video card from my system (650 ti boost) with his, now his boots fine and again after installing the drivers I have problems on my computer. (His card) Is this definitely a faulty GPU? Because it can't be related to other hardware.

I tried older drivers and beta drivers for his card also, nothing works.

I also noticed that when booting a system with my graphics card, it says PNY Nvidia GeForce 650 ti boost etc. etc. before the motherboard screen comes up, but nothing on his. Does this indicate a graphics card problem?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Edit: Strangely enough its taking forever to "Start Windows" even with my graphics card plugged into his computer. This shouldn't be the case because he has it installed to a 240gb solid state drive. But it does load...

Hey,
In advance sorry for my bad english.
To me it sound like the installation of windows had gone wrong.
Did you use the legitimate version of windows because a wrong installation seems the most logical explanation for a not fully booting pc.
Try swapping hard drives with one that surely has a working version of windows on it.

Make sure in your BIOS settings that it's booting windows from the drive you installed it on. The same thing happened to me and it turned out that installing the new drivers had somehow switched me from booting from hard drive to my ssd. Sounds like this is what might be happening.
