A desktop PC that does not have wireless already built in to the motherboard will need a WiFi adapter to connect to the router via WiFi.

Yes. If your computer does not currently have a WiFi adapter, you will need to purchase one in order to connect to your router wireless.

If your desktop is in the same room as the router it is significantly better performance to hook it up with an ethernet cable.
