I've been using 8/8.1 on my main rig for quite a while but stuck with 7 for my HTPCs due to WMC tuner card issues. I've since abandoned my whole home WMC extender ambitions. That's besides the point.
Built a HTPC as a gift this past Christmas. Chose to go with 8.1 because XBMC would be utilized for local media, no WMC in the equation. Low and behold 8.1 worked out to be a fantastic choice. The app ecosystem now has Metro apps for virtually all streaming services and whatever doesn't you can still create an icon. Win 7 required you navigate the desktop and a browser, or have a bunch of web address shortcuts cluttering the desktop.
Having large, mainly active, Metro icons as the first thing you see after boot is not only easier to navigate via a nontraditional input device it certainly is more visually appealing. I've since changed all 3 of my HTPC to win 8.1 and couldn't be happier.
8/8.1 may not be everyone's cup of tea for primary desk use but for a HTPC it is a home run all day long.
Has anyone else given 8.1 a shot for theater use, and what are your takeaways?
