I am looking for suggestions on which OS to install on a new build. I have both Win 8 Pro, and Win 7 Pro to use. My hardware config is: Asus Z87 Pro, Intel I7 4770K, 120 Gb SSD for the OS, and (2) 1 Tb HDD's in a Raid 1 (For disk failure protection) & 16 Gb Ram. I am planning on moving all the user directory's onto the HDD, and keep the OS, and programs on the SSD. Any benefits, or con's in one OS over the other? Thanks for any input

What are you using the system for? The OS benefits vary depending upon the application.

Also - on the RAID - I utilize them all the time at work, as I need servers that are up 24/7. When a drive fails, the workers keep going because I can hot-swap a drive and it rebuilds. The downside to RAID is the cost....

For home use - I never utilize RAID....I use a SSD (OS Drive), data drive and a backup drive (only in 1 PC). I store drive images of the SSD's on the backup drive, and backup the data daily using syncback free. If a drive fails, I can map it immediately to the "backup folders", install a new HDD (any size, any speed), and restore to that drive.

Something to think about....

new build new hardware, I would go with windows 8 for the simple reason of its better built in SSD support, better data integrity checking in the background. It will basically do background chkdsk repairs on sections of your hard drive for you and will locate bad sectors and move the attempt to move the data off failing sectors when they start to get read failures while they can still be fixed via the error correction codes.
Also, this data integrity checking reduces the need to use RAID. Last raid system I repaired had working drives and a broken custom controller that was not cost effective to replace (card cost $150 originally but a replacement card was $2600 (used) because of its age and the person knew you were screwed and they could charge anything they wanted) so the person decided that their data was not worth the cost. (i think they were scanned photos they really wanted back)
