install old windows xp drive on windows 8 sysyem

I have a dell xps 8700 with windows 8 I am trying to get it to recognize my Seagate 1tb sata hdd from the old computer it has windows xp on it and a boot sector would like to transfer files use as a backup.it shows up in bios but not disk management swapped some sata cables around and now the other dvd drive won't show up either
