This post is for multiple questions... I want to upgrade an old computer I have. I am not looking to do a complete overhaul at once due to budget. I want to try and keep the RAM, HDD, optical drive, case, video card and PSU. It currently is 2.3 ghz AMD Athlon X2 4400+, 4gb high density DDR2 800mhz RAM, 200gb SATA hard drive, DVD burner, DVD rom, 250w (I believe it is 250, definately no better than 300) PSU, nVidia 210gt pci-e x16 1gb video card. I want to upgrade the CPU and probably motherboard, but keep the rest until I can spend more on RAM and then video card and hard drive.

Any suggestions for filling in these items? Motherboard needs to be micro-ATX to fit the small size.

What is the best CPU I can use in this system (for real, not what OEM says)? Motherboard is M2N68-LA (Narra5 not 6).

No, just the HP Website is trustworthy enough. You will just have to build a new computer instead.

Oh, you are right. They are not well known I suppose. I found other phenom processors which are also good just a slight bit below the one I just said is the highest.

Phenom II X4 850
Phenom II X4 920
Phenom II X4 B97

Hope you find these ones.

Phenom II X4s are the ones you need NOT x2.

I think for the question I will need to make a change and have it best performance for price. Right now it has a dual-core 2.3ghz and I would like to move up to at least the performance equivalent of a intel core2duo e7400 and prefer a tri/quad-core. I need lower price than the $60-100 for a used older cpu ($20-40 used would be best). It is not the power system in the house, I am upgrading the stronger system to an i5-3470.

You are positive that these will work on the motherboard above?

Yes, this is the website that helped me find the CPU compatibility for your motherboard:

http://www.game-debate.com/motherboard/index.php?mot_id=984&cpuList=Pegatron+M2N68-LA+(Narra5)

The only concern I have is that it lists the board on that web site as -
Pegatron M2N68-LA (Narra5) motherboard socket Socket AM2+

The motherboard in this system is technically a M2N68-LA (Ivy) but is equivalent to (Narra5) -
Computer specs

HP/Compaq specifically has it as a AM2 not an AM2+ as the one you used lists. I will double check if the Ivy is listed in that site.

Oh! Sorry, my mistake. This motherboard supports only AM2 CPUs. The HP website refers to what cpu upgrade you could do with it. My apologies. I do really appreciate your vigilance and smart thinking.

I would love to upgrade more than they show however. I am very tight financially and so it becomes a huge concern (and I bought a AM2+ CPU in the past that did not work - it was an x3 240 if I remember right).

You are not aware of any better CPUs than that listed on HP's site?

Can you suggest a low cost board capable of supporting budget minded CPUs in the 2-4+ core range (though I would love an 8 core cpu, budget keeps me limited to lower cost even for my best machine). I would like something that will work with the parts of this machine in order to allow me to slowly build the new machine over time.

It does not need to be AMD based, just needs to be as compatible as possible with the existing parts to keep it to a minimum on cost and able to be spread out as much as possible.

This is another topic now. Sorry, this may take some time for me to figure out the board that may be best for you. I would recommend publishing another thread to the Tom's Hardware Forum specifically for asking the members that may be available at this time to answer back to you and choose for you which board will be cheap and will suite you best and will allow you to make upgrades in the future.
