I was looking at either buying a gtx 780ti or a radeon r9 290. I was wanting a unbiased opinion on which card you guys think would be betting in the long run. Im going to be running a custom water loop so cooling is not an issue. The price of the card is not a issue either. I will be eventually be upgrading to a 2650x1440 monitor really soon as well.

For less than 4k, the extra video memory doesn't really do a whole lot for you, at least not in any games that are out now. There really isn't a whole lot of difference in the 290 and 290x at stock fan speeds. However, if you crank up the fan speed of both so they don't throttle, or get ones that have an aftermarket cooler, the 290x is a little faster. If the 780Ti is the same price or only slightly more I would for sure go with it for that resolution. That being said, the R9 290 is a great card, especially if you can find it close to MSRP (399), and would give you a great gaming experience at that resolution as well.

They are not comparable performance wise, the 290 sits with the 780. The 290x is closer to the 780ti, but still fractionally slower. If money is no issue, the 780ti is a no brainer, I'm still curious as to why you're comparing the 290 to the 780ti though.

I heard the extra money for the 290x wasn't worth it because the 290 performs just as well according to benchmarks I've seen. You don't think the extra 1gb of ram and the 512 bit bus would be a reason to go with the r9 290 even at 2560x1440 resolutions.
