I want to upgrade an old computer I have. I am not looking to do a complete overhaul at once due to budget. I want to try and keep the RAM, HDD, optical drive, case, video card and PSU. It currently is 2.3 ghz AMD Athlon X2 4400+, 4gb high density DDR2 800mhz RAM, 200gb SATA hard drive, DVD burner, DVD rom, 250w (I believe it is 250, definately no better than 300) PSU, nVidia 210gt pci-e x16 1gb video card. I want to upgrade the CPU and probably motherboard, but keep the rest until I can spend more on RAM and then video card and hard drive.

Any suggestions for filling in these items? Motherboard needs to be micro-ATX to fit the small size.

Current specs are as follows in the link with the exception that the CPU is now a 4400+ instead of a 3800+ AMD Athlon 64 X2.

Currently this computer is used mostly as a internet, word processing, movie player and work machine using Citrix - so nothing too heavy duty. It has been (with lag) running ok on 3 gb ram. I am able to get 2gb sticks of DDR3 for about $15 and 4gb sticks for about $30-35... So I will probably go with 2x4gb of the cheaper after a while, but for now if I need to I can put 2x2gb in to get it to 4gb. I do want to keep price to a minimum and it is not going to be heavily used.

I appreciate the link - I will look into the prices of several items using it, thank you.

I decided to go with a Intel socket 1155 motherboard that I can put a recently acquired Pentium G2010 into with some DDR3 ram I have. It is slightly smaller than the existing board in dimensions.

Anyone see a problem coming out of this change? (not worried about reformatting and reinstalling windows as I would have done that soon anyway, just want to make sure it will run and install into the case.

This is the motherboard I bought.
