hey guys, i finished making my first build a week ago, everything seems normal when im playing games and surfing around but i noticed the temperatures reach high levels when i put the cpu under stress for a long time. when playing bf4, my temps reach 80-85 degrees.

i just ran the prime95 blend test and everything ran at 70-75 degrees for the first few minutes, but when i came back, temps were up near 95-100 degrees. did i install the fan wrong?

build:

ASUS Z87-A
Corsair Vengeance 8g 1600mhz
GTX 770 SC ACX
Hyper 212 EVO
Corsair TX750
NZXT Phantom 410 case w/ stock fans running. (2 exhausts, one on back, one on top, 1 intake fan near the front of the case.)

i can post some pics of inside the case if needed! :)

edit: everything fixed. reapplied thermal paste using "x" method and made sure positioning was correct. thanks a lot for help.

Well, if you have Turbo Boost on and also Enhanced Turbo that's boosting all cores to 3.9 GHz under load, then the core voltage sit around 1.100-1.160. But while using Prime95 it can go over 1.200v because of the AVX load. It's normal while using adaptive voltage but cause extra heating. But still, your cpu shoudn't hit to 95-100C at stock clocks with that cooler.

On a different note; Turbo Boost isn't very effective. I'm using it too at the moment. But the thing is; it uses more voltage than it should need actually. And because of that the cpu runs a bit hotter. For example, I can manually overclock to 4.2 GHz @ 1.150v and under load I'm getting almost the same temperature values.

So if your cpu keeps run hot even after reapplying...

I have the same cpu and the cooler and yes your temperature values look quite high. I'd re-apply thermal paste and reseat the cooler if I were you.

I'm usually idling around 27-28C and after a few hours of BF4 I see max of 55-56C (23-25C ambient) on stock freq. with turbo boost on for all cores.

I'd also check the core voltages under load just to be safe.

i see. i think i'll reseat the fan tomorrow. i did have some trouble putting the fan on as well so redoing it seems like a good idea. what should the core voltage sit around when its on load?

So if your cpu keeps run hot even after reapplying paste and reseating the heatsink, you can try disabling the Enhanced Turbo function that boosts all cores to 3.9GHz. Then the cores will hit 3.7GHz under full load and this will help reduce the temperature. If you are not satisfied with the drop then you can try disabling the Turbo Boost.

But I'm sure you'll solve the problem by reseating the heatsink. Don't forget to tell us your findings after you do it. :)

alright guys, i just removed the heatsink, cleaned everything up with isopropyl alcohol and reapplied thermal paste using the "x" method. made sure everything was perfect this time and the temperatures now seem to be super!

ran prime95 for about 15 mins and the temps didn't go above 62 degrees once which would usually jump up to 100 degrees as i said. thanks a lot for your help guys. i'll add a few pics of my build too :).
