Upgrade my system or hold out a while longer?

Hello,
First time on here; I'm not a builder but an average user on a 2005 Dell P4 running XP with a new SSD. I think it's time to upgrade but wonder if I need to spend the bucks yet. What I want is a Dell XPS 8700 i7 with Win7 Pro (I do some work from home). I have been pleased with our old Dell but realize it's 8 years old! I'm one of those "drive 'em in the dirt" dudes, I guess. I'm sure an i7 will amaze me. Any other input for upgrading now or suggestions on building a similar system? I need to spend more time on this site!
Thanks!

Well I was prepared to spend the $840 for the 8700 I found because I figure over the long haul it would be worth it, but if I can get similar performance for less, why not? I'm trying to be wise with the bucks )
I am in Virginia (USA).
Thanks!

Virginia...howdy, neighbor.
$800+ can build a pretty rational mid-grade system. And better performing than that Dell.

Howdy back atcha! I'd welcome any suggestions on components. I've done a little research but there's a lot of choices!

I went through PCpartpicker and made a quick build that would run almost any game at high settings (not ultra) at 60+ fps

And if its not for gaming the gpu can of course be either removed or toned down by quite a bit, but that is definitely more powerful than the Dell XPS 8700. Although it doesn't have the OS included, if you do add windows 7 it'll be around 900 USD. But some people prefer not to have the OS COME WITH the computer. (wink)

Thank you! That's very helpful! This will not be a gaming pc but I do edit audio, which is not as taxing, but power if nice. I already have two 8 gig sticks of ram waiting; is this motherboard a one slot config, I gather? Also I would like to add a media reader, maybe; seems like a handy option. Any thoughts on that? Thanks again for your time!

Sorry, I just looked at the board and see it has ample slots! Duh!

Alright, I've downgraded the graphics card to something that handles things like blu-ray's and mild gaming.
Also added a pretty nice media reader to the bottom of the list.
And i noticed that the Power Supply is a bit (twice as much as is needed *cough*) more powerful than is necessary, so that can be downgraded to something like the "Corsair CX 430W" unless you want to keep upgradability possible.
