Over the past couple of days, I've been having problems where my screen will have random horizontal or vertical lines appearing in places, or black boxes will appear. Occasionally the screen will go blank and then come back saying "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered".

I've got an AMD Radeon HD 7850, had it for almost 2 years and never had any problems with it. Never OC'd it either. When I first noticed the issue I updated the drivers and catalyst control centre. The issue is still happening.

Today I suffered a BSOD, and a few other times the screen has gone a different colour and I've had to do a hard reboot.

Any help would be great.

i have the exact same problem. i'm gonna roll the dice and assume my video card is bad and replace it with either a GTX 660 or a Radeon R9 270. if that doesn't fix it i'll just assume the NSA doesn't want me using my computer and is sabotaging me.

To keep the current card (if you haven't the money to replace it) revert to the older drivers. Then wait a while, a few weeks, a month, and try the latest drivers again.
Another option is to remove the card and start the system with the display plugged into the integrated port, and look at the results. You won't be able run any modern games, but you can test the graphical output with simple games and surfing and whatnot. Who knows, it could be the video cable or the monitor. But if the errors disappear with the video card, shut it all down again and reseat the card. It may not have come partially unseated with years of use, and when everything gets to vibrating in there it may have a deleterious effect on the output.

Well I jiggled the card about a bit, made sure everything was plugged in securely and that seems to have fixed it (touch wood). Haven't had any issues since I did that yesterday which is good! All the issues were happing when I was doing other stuff in Windows, I didn't even bother trying to play a game, so later on today I'll try playing one to see how it fairs under load.
