I recently purchased a Toshiba 50", and found out it had no audio outputs. I have an older surround system that only accepts RCA cable. I seen that you can get a 4x1 splitter that has only one RCA. My question is do I just get a RCA cable that goes from one ended to two so I can hook both red/white audio cable up? Excuse my technical ignorance!

Solution
that hdmi switch is the same one still sold by monoprice here
http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=6259&seq=1&format=3
Inputs/Outputs: (4) HDMI® inputs - (1) HDMI® output

the box is a hdmi switch and only has 4 hdmi inputs and 1 hdmi output.

not sure what you mean about one rca style output. if it is just 1 (one) single plug not colored white or black then it is most likely a spdif coax connection which has rca type ends but a coax wire. typically they are colored orange but i've seen them yellow and black as well. coax is digital, rca is analog. you would be talking about a fancy $50 conversion box which will not give you surround sound (since rca only can carry stereo). a y cable will do...
that depends.

what source device(s) are you hooking up to the tv and what are the connection types?
list links to the products if you can

what television did you buy and what out puts does it have?
list link

how do you currently have your devices connected to your tv?
for example... hdmi cable, via rca

My tv is a Toshiba 50l1450u, it has only hdmi inputs, and USB input, no audio outputs at all. My surround system is a divinci home theater with only AV inputs for sound. I am currently only running antenna (Air Head) so I do not have a cable box to run the sound thru.

hmm. direct antenna to tv does pose a problem.

please find a screenshot of your connections on the davinci home theater. i need to know what you have for inputs. without that i'm just guessing.

however, there is something you can likely do to fix your situation.

you can buy one of those digital conversion boxes which are meant to hook up to older televisions which lack a digital tuner inside. they typically have at least rca but some have hdmi and component outputs or spdif in some cases.

something like this for example
http://www.amazon.com/Multi-function-Digital-Converter-Box-Recording/dp/B00BFIJQ10/ref=sr_1_3?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1391277201&sr=1-3

it has component output, hdmi output and even coax output.

if you need surround sound: if your old home theater can accept coaxial spdif from such a box it will be a rather easy just using the coax from the conversion box to the home theater and then just using the video by hdmi or component to the tv.

if you dont need surround sound: you could just connect component video to the tv and component audio to the home theater. this results in stereo sound though.

-----

i know it seems like a waste to buy a tuner when you already have one inside your television but seeing as you have zero outputs that is your only real choice (except to just return the tv and buy one with sound outputs)

My only issue with running that converter box is I have blue ray/xbox 360 also to run audio thru. I need a box that has coax input/output and multiple HDMI inputs with HDMI output to tv. Also needs to have RCA audio output to run divinci sound system. Its a nice system with pre amped 10" floor sub. I cannot upload pics via smart phone for some reason, another problem in it self. LOL

the conversion box fixes the antenna issue. there is no other way to get audio from antenna except to have an external tuner. most receivers even do not have a tuner for tv antenna which means you would still be stuck with that box.

without going to a receiver replacment you are probably going to be stuck using a digital tuner for antenna and a hdmi/av source switch box. the trouble however is that it might not output hdmi and rca at the same time. you might need to just run all video through and use splitters for the rca to the sound system as well as perhaps some wonky adapter boxes. all of that doesnt come cheap.

honestly the easiest solution is to just replace your receiver with something new that takes hdmi input and spdif input. you would still need the external antenna converter but you will not have to deal with a variety of splitters and adapters to make things work. its also the most expensive option though so expect $150-200 for a receiver and $50 for the antenna box

if your receiver box you have now already accepts a spdif coax or optical signal..... the best/cheapest easiest way would just be to return the television and buy one with spdif optical or coax output which supports 5.1 (not all support 5.1). keep in mind that not all televisions do so you might end up looking around a bit for one.

Ok, I may just go to direct tv, I hear that satellite boxes will allow me to utilize my sound system and hook all my stuff HDMI as well. Not sure if this is correct but direct tv will not get my business unless it does. I'm just trying to avoid losing my sound system it rocks beyond any sound bar or newer stuff I've seen
thanks for all your help..

directv sucks. we dropped them 10+ years ago. you pay rediculous monthly charges for tv when there isnt anything good on and still have crazy amounts of advertisements. i'd advise staying away. seems to be a silly switch as well just because of a sound issue.

in any case... the cable box (well satelite tv box) will still need to hook into something so that it can hook up to your sound system. it doesnt have a whole lot of fancy inputs on the back or act like an av switch. the box is just going to have hdmi or rca/comp outputs to connect up to your tv or receiver. it would just be spending more money to accomplish nothing towards your goal.

not sure which model this one is but here have a look. note the zero inputs

why dont you put a new receiver (control box) in your existing sound setup? you can power speakers and the sub on any receiver. it doesnt need to be the one which came with the set. in fact some people do this to keep their old speakers but to upgrade to newer hardware like hdmi compatibility. what are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for the heads up on direct tv. I suppose losing just my sub would be ok if I went to a receiver type setup. My amp is actually mounted behind my sub box, that's also where all my surround speakers are hooked up also the front of the sub has digital display. If I eliminate the sub I do have two 15" cerwin Vegas I could use. I still do not understand how I would hook up my blue ray player to get sound out of my receiver and still run HDMI to tv. Blue ray has one HDMI output.

hmm i'm unable to really find too much information on them.

well, other than the fact that they are a really cheap knock off brand which was sold around 2008 in a countrywide scam ring out of the back of trucks and vans.

not sure what you mean that your sub is a receiver. since no info is available you would have to provide details.

NO S#$T!! I got them from a van in Gary Indiana. The people were really convincing they had divinci shirts and wore suits. I only gave $150 for them. They had a story that customers had paid for them then they refunded the money and just picked them up. Instead of bringing them back to the store were they could no longer resale them they would cut me a deal! Holy crap... Well either way they sound really good and sub hits hard, has been great for about six years now.. If I decide to go with a different sound system would you recommend any? The divinci sales people wanted alot of money for these, I keep a small amount in a separate account in case of emergencies $150-$200. I told them that's all I had and I couldn't pay anymore, now that I look back he did follow me to atm to see my balance.. That's why I carry a .45 !!

well... from what i've heard some people claim that for $100-200 they really dont sound bad at all. certainly not $xxxx speakers like they claim but perhaps enough to compete with the other no name brands found on ebay. (by the way those speakers retail for about $140 on ebay from what i've heard)

by the way... what do you carry? (brand?)
i'm a 1911 guy myself :)

i'm not telling you to get rid of those speakers. depending on how everything is connected you may be able to use them still.

if you want to know what a budget system that i could recommend would be? probably the energy take 5.1 classic (includes all speakers and sub) paired with a receiver. thats about as budget as things get without resorting to really cheap HTIB sets. or perhaps the klipsch home theater set which isnt terrible or i've heard there is a boston acoustics set which comes with a real receiver.

http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=181310669398 hear is the 4x1 switch I was originally looking at. And I recently picked up a Springfield XDS.45 its small and extremely accurate. I forget I'm even carrying it at times. But yes my colt commander 1911 is my baby! To nice for carry piece tho. If I only knew half as much about electronics as I do about guns I would possibly have surround sound for the Superbowl.

that is a hdmi switch. it would allow you to swap between your other two hdmi sources. i suppose if you used the one box i mentioned you could put hdmi to it as well. however, after that switch you would need a box which splits off a spdif coax or rca (depending on what your sound system takes) signal which can run $50+ for something decent which isnt trash. if you need one that does hdcp support the only one i personally know of is $100 (not saying there arent others cheaper)

ah. yeah i've heard of the xds springfield. not sure i really care about guns made in south america though. i've heard that for the price they arent bad.

not really sure this is the place to discuss weaponry so i will pm you what i have :)

I think that box has three audio outputs, has 1 optical, 1 single RCA?, and there was another. I'm wondering if all my HDMI goodies plug into it, then the audio for those devices will run out to surround? What I'm calling single RCA plug is just one RCA style output, I need both red/white to hook into stereo. Would I just run a single to a y style RCA cord?

not sure why it would be a single rca red+white (ie just one of those plugs) since i've never seen/heard of such a thing being on a product. lets just say that for an instant that it was this way... putting a splitter on the line would only give you a LEFT+LEFT or RIGHT+RIGHT signal. essentially MONO sound.

in any case the box doesnt support those outputs you may want to see below.

-----

something like this...

http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5557&seq=1&format=3#specification
Audio/Video Inputs 3x HDMI® on rear panel, 1x HDMI® on front panel
Audio/Video Outputs 1x HDMI® on rear panel
Digital Audio Outputs 1x S/PDIF Optical (Toslink)* and 1x Digital Coax*
Analog Audio Outputs 1x 3.5mm (1/8") stereo

may work if your home theater system can accept a coax or optical signal because honestly that is the only way that you will get surround sound. rca (red+white) is just not capable of providing surround sound at all (it is for stereo only)

with that said... you would still need to buy a digital conversion box for antenna (the external tuner type box) since i'm not sure if you can manage to find one of these such boxes merged with a hdmi switch. essentially that would be a perfect product for you however i dont think one exists and if it does i'm not going to spend hours looking for one :) (though you can have a look if you like)

essentially...

-blueray plugs into switch box via hdmi
-console plug into switch box via hdmi
-antenna goes to conversion box then conversion box plugs into switch box via hdmi
-switch box outputs hdmi to tv
-switch box outputs coax/optical to sound system

HOWEVER, this particular product will only work if you have spdif optical or coax input on your home theater. i do not believe you told me if you did or not. if you do not how the hell are you getting surround sound out of it now?

------------------------------

now i did just pick a product out of a hat which had the connections needed. you might want to give it a bit more thought or search around for other products similar.

you also want to tell me for 100% sure or find a photo online of the rear panel of your equipment or take a photo yourself (ideal). i need to know what all of the audio inputs are on your home theater. the most important thing to know is if it has spdif optical or coax support. if not you need to list everything.

I see, my issue is I'm calling it surround sound when I've only hooked it up before with RCA cables. I don't care if its surround or stereo to me I just want it loud with bass! I'm going to purchase a HDMI switch today from WalMart that has what appears to be head phone jack output, I then will buy a cord that goes from that style jack to RCA. I'm hoping this will work for now!

the hdmi switch wont give you sound from antenna. for that you would need the other box.

if all you care about is sound output from the other two devices then that hdmi switch would likely work.

HOWEVER, if your surround sound set has a coax/optical (please do look to see if it does!) then you would be giving yourself a huge improvement (you would actually get surround). keep in mind that not all speakers may fire if using a stereo signal unless in a very particular audio output mode on most htib sets. do all speakers fire for you with only rca hookups?

Yes they all fire, and my sub/amp only has RCA hook ups. I'm going to try the HDMI switch/jack to RCA cord just to get Superbowl sound, after realizing my system isn't the greatest I will probably upgrade to a receiver style stereo. With all the inputs I need. Thanks for all the advice I will post reply after my trip to Wally world.
