I want to try and run the xeon 5640 instead of shelling out the money for the q9650 but haven't seen anyone with info on if it works on this motherboard or not. Any ideas?
hmph after looking a little harder this http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/ says it should be possible just it never got tested....pry just going to have to swing for the fences and hope for the best.

........... annnnnd why would you do that if I may ask?
Personally I wouldn't sink a dime into LGA 775.
If I had to watch every dollar, I'd get a used Asus Pro Z68 off ebay. Then your wide open, i3-2100 to i7-2600K. As an enthusiast you should step up to a Sandy Bridge(or newer) and UEFI.
The x5640 is a lga 771 and is 50 bucks...i got the whole pc free and it has a crap dual core so the xeon will help if i game on it. And this is just a spare build with mostly parts i have laying around, my main pc is a 8150 at 4.8ghz and dual 7950s

This is abit too complex for you to do but if you don't care if it messes up your motherboard then go for it. Just wanted to warn you though, like the saying goes..... 'Better safe than sorry'.
How is it complex? Cut 2 tabs and smack a little sticker on the xeon and its done. Watched 2 videos and read 2 write ups on it and its really not that hard

How did this mod work out for you. I have the same mobo and want to make the same mod for the same reasons. However, this is a business application and needs to be rock solid. I read on cpu-mod.com that some have encountered BSOD and loss of Speed Step functionality. THey were searching for Bios modifications to help with this. Need to save money but don't need headaches and certainly don't want to fry my mobo.
Intend to use Xeon x5470 mod on new Intel dp45sg with new 8gb GSkil Ripjaws DDR3-1333 and new WD Raptor. Definitely don't want any fries
