Hello everyone, my first post here. I'm starting to research options for a new build in honor of The Witcher 3 later this year. My question is if upgrading my current motherboard for a newer chipset version is worth it in my case.

I currently have a ASUS M5a87, w/AMD FX 4100, 8G DDR3, Radeon 6800 Series card.

This board runs the 870 chipset, I believe 990 chipset is the most current version.

Other than the older chipset my current board has everything I need with updated bios for AM3+ Processors and support for DDR3.

What are the advantages of the newer chipset? Faster in some respects but im not to familiar with the benefits of the chipsets.

Thanks

The differences lie in the ability to run PCie 3, faster memory and a faster south bridge. The motherboard is the foundation of the computer. However, if you are not going to replace the gpu anytime soon just wait a while and see what's next. When you replace the motherboard you will have to replace Windows so there is added cost there as well.
