upgrade to gtx680 or change rig?

Good day,
I am currently running the following rig for gaming, but realised that battlefield 4 is too demanding. I could only achieve about 20 to 30fps on medium graphic settings, and about 30 to 50 fps on low graphics settings. I understand that my low graphic settings is playable, but I would at least want to run medium settings and above(preferably high & ultra) at an enjoyable fps.

My first option is to change my graphic card to nvidia palit's gtx680 4gb as it suits my bill. My question is, isit advisable to upgrade to gtx680? or my current rig will bottleneck my new graphic card? is there any alternative options? thanks!

system(cpu and gpu is water cooled):
-Q6600 Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz 3.0GHz(O.C stable)
-8GB ddr3 ram
-500W PSU
-Asus GTX 550ti 1gb

the 680 will likely be a little to much gpu. yopu would be able to max out the game but your min/max and avg fps would be slightly lower over all compared to if you were running in an i series quad. you may loose as much as 10 fps overall. which puts you into 670 territory so with that in mind a 760 may be a better more balanced option..
as its a Q66 you may be able to get it up to 3.4 with good cooling and that should counter any potential bottlenecks.

Since my i3 is more powerful than that CPU, I wouldn't do it. Now if you can get that GPU for a good price and will be upgrading your CPU and motherboard later then go for it but that CPU won't work too well with the 680.

BTW just using the i3 as an example as everyone knows of it and there are plenty of modern benchmarks of it with high end GPUs such as the 680
 
actually mate your i3 is only clock for clock better. on a per core basis. but overall the core 2 quad is a better gaming part as it has more threading ability due to having 2 extra cores. so while your rite you would get better performance in a game like starcraft it would get punished if you tried to match your i3 on a game like bf3/4

thanks hexit! you are right. q6600 might perform better in certain aspect compared to i3, but i3 is indeed faster if compared by Hz. i3 is newer and different technology. Thanks for the pointer on the slight frame drop. so i believe you suggest me to get gtx670/gtx760 instead of gtx680/gtx770 due to bottle necking. Thanks for the advice! :)
 

lol my bad i didnt see you had the i3 dual with hyperthreading. i was referring to the i3 dual core dual thread...
but even with that being said i would still take the core 2 quad over the i3 for a game like bf3. the fps will just be more stable and wont bounce from 5 to 50...
if you look a little deeper into your link you will see startcraft HTS. the core 2 duo punishes the quads it has higher raw speed running 2 cores and for this game the cpu speed is the main qualifier. switch to tombraider and the quads take over. as 4 real threads are better than 2 real and 2 virtual.
this is the problem with budget parts. you have to compromise. on some games the i3 will win hands down but on others a core 2 quad will scrape a win. so while it is technically better, i still stand by my original statement that the core 2 quad is still a decent gaming part that will be beat/match an i3 in some games and loose in others.
reason? not all games are cpu bound (dependant on how good the cpu is) the more cpu bound a game is the stronger the cpu needs to be on a per thread basis. on none cpu bound games you will find that the gpu plays a much bigger part in the games overall fps count.
