New to site, why does my AMD FX 8350 (CPU) keep overheating suddenly?

I am using the stock fan, but this has never been an issue until right now. I don't overclock and I've had this CPU for over a year with no problems. I started up Final Fantasy XIV last night and all of a sudden my PC just shuts down. I boot it back up after a few minutes of trying and launch the game again with Speedfan running, and Temp2 (which I am assuming is my CPU since my GPU doesn't spike that much) shoots up to 70-80C before shutting me off again.

The day before I tried playing FFXIV I played League of Legends and had no shutdown. Now after I have had the first one, it shuts down every time I run any "intensive" application.

I took my fan and heatsink off and cleaned them thoroughly, there is no dust. The only thing I can think of is my thermal paste needs to be re-applied because it looks quite thin and very dried up, it hasn't been re-applied since I purchased the CPU a year ago.

Can re-applying thermal paste REALLY make that much of a difference? I know I need to go ahead and do it anyway, but will that solve my issues or should I be expecting a bigger problem here? Like I said, ever since my first shutdown, it has done it on EVERYTHING I run besides Chrome. Oh, and my fan RPM in BIOS is 3400, but Speedfan is only showing 2400. I have no idea how to use it or increase my fan speeds, I'm kind of new to it.

Edit: Here is a snip of my desktop sitting idle.

It could solve the problem yes it is really hard to tell. Granted most of the time TIM will last much longer than a year but that could be the problem and since you took it of it need to be re-applied anyway. Make sure also that the fan is spinning correctly as it could be a bad fan also that was the problem. Personally I would look into a aftermarket cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO they are much better than the stock cooler and are not to pricey.
