Hey guys,
I have a very puzzling problem. I recently bought an external hard drive, a seagate expansion of 1TB with USB 3.0, to use as a backup drive.
However, windows backup will just not work on it. Every time i try to backup, I get an error message stating that the backup could not be completed due to an I/O device error. I used chkdsk to see what's up, and it turns out it had switched to the RAW format.
It used to be in NTFS, and I had been able to put some stuff on there, but now it's on RAW. The simplest thing I could think of was to format it to NTFS again, but this proved impossible. This happened a few days ago, so I don't remember the exact error code (sorry!)
I returned the drive, got my money back and used it to buy a new one. But this drive does EXACTLY THE SAME THING.
This time I was a little more patient, and checked device management. This showed that the drive was still in NTFS, while chkdsk said it was unable to perform since it was in RAW. I could luckily still use safely remove hardware, and plug it back in again. After this the RAW format seems to have switched back to NTFS again, and I can use it to store and access my files again.
I'm currently running chkdsk on the HDD, and I will post the results when it's done.
It's probably not a faulty device, but a problem with my machine or software (so maybe I'm posting in the wrong section of the forum?).
This PC is homebuilt, and my first attempt. I have encountered no other problems and have been using it happily for about a week. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/vanGenne/saved/3uIm
I could really use your input on this guys, I'm flabbergasted..
Cheers!
