Hey guys,

I have a very puzzling problem. I recently bought an external hard drive, a seagate expansion of 1TB with USB 3.0, to use as a backup drive.
However, windows backup will just not work on it. Every time i try to backup, I get an error message stating that the backup could not be completed due to an I/O device error. I used chkdsk to see what's up, and it turns out it had switched to the RAW format.

It used to be in NTFS, and I had been able to put some stuff on there, but now it's on RAW. The simplest thing I could think of was to format it to NTFS again, but this proved impossible. This happened a few days ago, so I don't remember the exact error code (sorry!)

I returned the drive, got my money back and used it to buy a new one. But this drive does EXACTLY THE SAME THING.

This time I was a little more patient, and checked device management. This showed that the drive was still in NTFS, while chkdsk said it was unable to perform since it was in RAW. I could luckily still use safely remove hardware, and plug it back in again. After this the RAW format seems to have switched back to NTFS again, and I can use it to store and access my files again.

I'm currently running chkdsk on the HDD, and I will post the results when it's done.

It's probably not a faulty device, but a problem with my machine or software (so maybe I'm posting in the wrong section of the forum?).

This PC is homebuilt, and my first attempt. I have encountered no other problems and have been using it happily for about a week. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/vanGenne/saved/3uIm

I could really use your input on this guys, I'm flabbergasted..

Cheers!

Windows chkdsk/error checker will not tell you if the drive is faulty as it only checks the data on it.
For fault testing you need to test it with Seagate's own diagnostic software which tests the actual drive itself.

Hey, sorry for the slow answer, I was travelling.
chkdsk came up clean, and I tried the Seagate Tools. Yesterday the short drive self test completed without errors, so I decided to try the short generic today. Short generic failed today, and the DST failed as well! Which is strange since the DST didn't fail yesterday.
So I guess my drive is faulty? Which is the 2nd one in a row? :(
