ok I am in need of upgrading my Dell xps 400 as she is getting a little long in the tooth. she has Pentium D CPU 3.20GHz 4gb ram Nvidia gts 240. I would like to reuse any parts i can from the old girl so i can get a better mobo cpu and gpu. things i was thinking i could reuse are things like the hard drive and optics drives maybe the psu even the tower. i will need a new OS seeing how all i got is XP. i have a monitors, speakers, keyboard, mouse i will be reusing. i dont mind start low with ram and upgrading

needs to be able to play games like Everquest, LoTR, SWTOR, WoW on high settings. also will need to play new games like Everquest Next and the likes on high settings
Thanks in advance

The hard drive, optical drive, and peripherals should be reusable. The tower is BTX form factor, so it probably won't be reusable, and the psu is likely to be incompatible with atx motherboards even if it provides enough power for a newer build. What do you think of this:

Total:$615 ..you might need fans and a cooler ;)

Your optical drive and storage may be IDE;If that is the case, you will need new storage.

All the games you listed will do better with a higher-IPC chip and do not require more than 2 cores.

I can game with a similar mobo and a 3570k+7950 on highest settings.ANY game.

schmuckley, you make a good point about the optical drive and storage being IDE. I hadn't thought of that, but I checked and the hdd at least is IDE from what I can find. However, the OP will not be able to reuse the tower with that motherboard, because the tower is BTX and the mobo is microATX, which has a radically different layout: if you look at the back of a BTX motherboard laid horizontal with the cpu face up, the expansion slots are on the left, whereas for ATX/MicroATX they're on the right from that perspective. There were a few cases made that could take either a BTX motherboard or an ATX motherboard, but I wouldn't expect it from a Dell.

my hdd is sata so i can reuse that. but ya my optics are ide so any cheap drive will work for that. dont think i have even used the optic drive in years so don't need anything good ther. and ya dont think i can reuse the tower
and i muti box in eq and others. but i would like to play bf4 and other games along that line just can't atm do to lag. Nothing worse thing getting shot point blank in the face befor ya even see the guy

So i think all i realy can reuse is the hdd and peripherals
