I have an alienware M17x r3 with a 660M nvidea Intel core i7-3630qM 2.40ghz 2401 mhz 4 core. It cannot handle shadows as well it gets hot after awhile and frames drop even with a recent thermal gel replace. Can I upgrade the cpu in my laptop?

Yes you upgrade the CPU in your laptop, however based on what you have detailed above I'd say that your gpu isn't performing as the CPU doesn't play that crusial of a role in gaming as some might think.
