So I'm having some trouble with my internet speed in terms of its relative speed compared to other devices I have connected to my network. I'm on a 10 Mbps connection (megabits not bytes) with a download speed that's usually around 2-2.5 MB/s through the gaming service Steam or any other download service.
However, I noticed today that I'm no longer receiving those speeds on my desktop when on my laptop I'm still getting the same speed. On my desktop I'm hovering anywhere between 2-4 Mbps or 150-350 kb/s on Steam. I did a scan on my desktop using MalwareBytes and deleted some suspicious programs and I've also called my ISP who couldn't help me with anything. I also pulled up the Resource Monitor and saw no programs hogging my bandwidth. So I did a clean install of Windows 7 thinking there was some deeply entrenched worm that I couldn't get out.
Upon reinstalling everything I discovered that I still have the same problem. I'm still seeing slower speeds and my laptop is doing just fine.
My internet setup is like this. I have a Motorola modem connected to my cable connection, this is then run to my Belkin N+ router using an ethernet cable. My Belkin N+ router is then connected to my desktop through another ethernet cable.
Edit: So I've noticed that some kind of throttling seems to be taking place. I know it isn't my ISP because I've already asked them. But when using Steam as a sort of download manager and tracker to see how my bandwidth is doing I begin going up rapidly to around 1 MB/s and then am brought down where it fluctuates wildly below 750 kb/s. I've downloaded TCPOptimizer and messed with some settings that have allowed me to get the full amount of bandwidth. I think things are good now.
