Solution

You've got excellent system...
8GB is more than a sufficient capacity for the RAM. But if you want to install more than one DIMM you must use either Dual Channel or Quad Channel. So 2x8GB, 2x16GB, 4x8GB are recommended. Don't go for 2 3 DIMMs. They'll work but you won't be able get any channel support. Performance wise it does not matter if you use 4GB, 8GB, 16GB etc but it depends upon two things which are: -

Speed of RAM in terms of MHz: Higher values are recommended
CAS Latency: Lower vlaues are recommended

Hope this will help you

Yea I'm thinking of using 2 x 8gb right off the bat but later will buy another two I have an intel i7 4770k cpu plus a gtx 780i graphic card an im using a asus z87 deluxe dual atx motherboard

You've got excellent system. I was using Corsair Vengeance Pro 16 GB earlier now I've switched to Corsair Dominator Platinum series. Man though they are expensive but they are worth every single penny spent on them.

Happy Hunting
