Basic Information:
Internet Provider: TDS Telecom
Router: Actiontec GT724WG

Problem: I just bought internet with TDS Telecom, and the DSL connection is constantly dropping all day long. I've had it for only 8 days now, and it's been like this since day 1. I will be calling my provider on Monday to schedule for a technician to come take a look at the router, the box outside, etc... but I'm very suspicious of it being a provider-side issue. I'm very tempted to hold to that belief since the router I'm using is the one that they gave me and has it's fair share of bad reviews. And it also may be I'm just at the very end of the line(which may have a terrible d.s.l.a.m. on top of it). I live in Jasper, Ga. It's a small town, but I'm not even in the town to be frank, I live about 8 miles away from the highway up in the mountains. I'm enrolled in online college courses and this connectivity problem is making it a real pain to keep up with my studies and assignments.

Symptoms: DSL connection is not working. Drops erratically. The speed of the connection is erratic as well. Not always, but it's on and off. One minute I'll be watching a video with no problems, next minute I'm lucky if I can load Google. Sometimes it will drop every few minutes, sometimes every other hour. It's been doing it on a daily basis. To try and remedy it I reboot from the router webpage, and/or power cycle the router. It reestablishes connection soon after but there's no telling how long it will last. Nothing seems to work. If I neglect to do a reboot or power cycle, it will more often than not just sit there for hours on end and not be connected at all, with the dsl light just flashing the whole time, and the internet light being off. I have changed the ethernet cable, as well as the phone jack cable. Both were new already, but I replaced them again. It didn't fix the issue. Guys, I'm really stumped on this problem, and I'm starting to get behind on my work now because of it. If someone can help me figure out what the problem might be, I would really appreciate it.

I have uploaded an album of images showing all of my router settings, along with the system log on the router when it's exhibiting these problems.

You do have DSL filters on all your phones and any other devices connected to the phone lines? My uncle didn't have one on his DirecTv DVR and had similar problems.

I also live at the end of a line and until December I had 3Mb/s ATT DSL and had been stuck with that for literally the last 10 years. Finally they brought UVerse here and I have a decent connection. I'm about 12 miles north of Macon BTW. I don't think they would have offered you a 15Mb/s connection if you were too far away from the dslam and since your speed test looks fine it looks like you have a good connection when it's actually up.

I had very similar problems to you when we had standard DSL about May of last year. For over a month the connection would go up and down and fast and slow intermittently with no seeming rhyme or reason. Finally a tech came out and redid some outside connections and it fixed the problem. It took hours of being on the phone with tech support and 2 service calls from 2 different techs to figure it out though.

So make sure you have good filters then call their tech support and see if they can tell anything of their end. Hopefully they have a decent support crew. I'm not familiar with the company.

Sure is pretty up there. We used to get up to Amicalola Falls and rent a cabin every year when I was a kid. It was always great stopping and getting fresh apple cider and fritters then going to Dahlonega and eating at the Smith House.

In your log file it looks like it can't see your DNS servers. That could be that the DNS servers are down or that it can't see them because of a bad connection.

Next time it goes down, go to start menu or [windows key + r], type in "cmd" (no quotes) and then type in "ping 74.125.225.114" (no quotes) if you receive a response that means internet is working but the dns servers are down.

You could try some different dns servers but I'm guess it is just an issue with the physical connection (will need your isp to fix it)

I just remembered that I forgot to get a DSL filter for the second phone in the house. I'll go do that, as well as ping the DNS servers when the connection starts dropping again. I'll get back to you guys with the results in a day or two.

Yeah it is real nice out here. Decent weather with very scenic surroundings. And yeah Amicalola Falls is real nice. I just moved back here from Michigan temporarily but I've already gone there quite a few times since it's only a 40'ish minute drive.

Update: I did a ping test on that ip twice when the connection started acting up again.

Result #1: No response, yet I could use the Google search engine and the results would pop up instantly, however any other website that I tried to go to wouldn't load at all. I was however able to load SpeedTest after trying a few times. I loaded the site and did a speed test when it was acting screwy and it showed the speeds at what they should be.

Result #2: Got a response with no packet loss, but I couldn't use anything. No connection as far as I could tell, no websites would load, not even Google.

I did the first and second ping a few minutes apart. Between when the connection first began to act up, the 60 second reboot, and attempting to use the internet with no particular success other than what I listed above, 10 minutes went by before the connection went back to normal.

Unplug all the telephone lines from the wall except the one to the modem. Make sure the line to the modem has a filter on it and make sure it has 2 outs. It should say phone and one should say DSL or modem like this.

That should rule out noise on the line as the culprit.

Just a quick update:
Got some info from Tech Support and they said they gave me an older model that isn't supported anymore. Why the Tech gave me an older one when he came out I don't know, but they're sending me a new model on Thursday. They said that the problem should be fixed by the newer model and I'm hoping it will be, but I'm not too hopeful after reading the reviews on it. It's the Actiontec GT784, and there are a ton of negative reviews on it. Hopefully it will work for me, but I might have to just buy one off of Newegg. As for the DSL filter, they said the tech listed in his notes that he put a DSL filter on our box, and I took a look at it and it seems that the line for the router isn't setup on the filter so that shouldn't be the problem.

Anyways, I'm going to see how things turn out with this newer model modem that they're sending me and then I'll get back to you with the results. I'll see you guys Thursday or Friday.
