I was wondering what is the highest card for PCI-e 2.0 x16? What I mean is what is the highest PCI-e 3.0 card that won't be bottle-necked by this bus bandwidth.

Solution
Don't worry, it won't bottleneck.
Many guys run cards in SLI, which at 3.0x16 run at x8 each, and still deliver full performance. 3.0x8 and 2.0x16 are equivalent.

Yes but at the expense of performance loss -even minor for lower cards- that is why I asked. I don't want to waste my money on a card that will be bottle-necked by the bus while I could have bought a cheaper one. The GTX 760 for example has 6 GHz data rate which is 1 GHz higher than the max data rate for the gen 2.0 x16 slot. I tried to find comparison charts between 760 running @ gen 3.0 and gen 2.0 x16 but couldn't find anything.

Thank you for your reply.
I read in a few posts here and elsewhere that memory clock and PCI-e clock are related. From what I understood a PCI-e clock that is lower than the memory clock will affect performance. In that case the PCI-e gen 2 only lets the card use 5 GHz of its memory speed because of bus limitations.

Then if that is the case wouldn't I be better off with a lower card which won't be affected by the limitations and would obviously be cheaper?

Thank you for the reply.
Just one more thing, I need to know what is the cheapest AMD CPU that won't bottleneck this card.

I was planning to get FX-6300 with that card should I get instead FX-8320 with R9 270/270x? Which is the better combination in your opinion?

Faster is always better, but i don't think You will notice difference in games, FX-8320 is better in tasks like video encoding, other multitask activities, if You don't plan doing that 6300 it is OK for games. Of course if You in AMD camp :) I prefer Intel, at this current moment.

so I should go with FX-6300 (Since this is a gaming upgrade anyway) + Which of the two cards GTX 760 (ASUS OR GIGABYTE) or XFX R9 270x core edition or Sapphire R9 270? This will be a final build so it should last for at least 3 years. And which upgrade should I start with as well(CPU or GPU) from phenom II x2 555 and HD 4850?

Yes I already have an AMD mobo which I have bought recently, I don't have prejudices but I want to have the best for my money and I am not going to upgrade the mobo which I have only bought recently. Maybe the next time when I am considering a new build if AMD is still lagging that far behind I'll go with Intel but that won't happen anytime in the near future though.

You can go with something like FX-6350, is seems to have a bit more power. If there is any chance You are going to get an new monitor in near future that will support 1080p resolution, then GTX760. But if You are going to play 3 years at same 1280*1024 resolution then R9 270 will do it for You, just look that it would have custom cooling. Something like http://eu.msi.com/product/vga/R9-270-GAMING-2G.html#overview

You could try to get VGA first, but don't be upset if CPU will bottleneck it :) Some games still should play better with new VGA and old CPU. If You upgrade CPU first it won't give You any advantage.

Thank you very much for your help. The reason I wanted to get the GTX 760 actually was the Physix support since I couldn't find any lower nVidia card in the same price range as R9 270 (GTX 660 OC GIGABYTE has a very similar price I can't find it where I live). I know I am starting to sound annoying but is the Physix acceleration worth buying the GTX 760 to play at that reolution?

I found through searching on the internet some people claiming that an overclocked 8320 @ 4.5 can perform as good as i5 2500k at stock. Are there any AMD experts out there who can help? Which is the best build 8320+R7 270 or 6300+GTX 760 for playing at 1280*1024 smoothly over at least the next three years?
