Can games ever use more than 2GB's of vram on a 1920 x 1080p monitor?

Battlefield 4's 3 Gb vram recommendation was a myth. It didn't use more than 2.25Gbs @ ultra settings o a 1080p monitor. will/can future games really use more Vram. lets say 3/4gbs on 1080p resolutions

I have read here on Tom's you don't need more than 1GB of VRAM for 1080p.
I don't know about BF4, but LA Noire uses around 530MB all maxed out with my 1440x900 monitor.
Other games may have different results.
