Hello everyone,

I have a rather old PC, but, it is still very much usable for me,
apart for not having enough memory, I just replaced the GPU,
and the last thing I would like to upgrade is the RAM.

I use my PC for very large Photoshop files, large scenes in 3DS-MAX, HD edits in premiere and AE
and so on, usually I have several of those programs running together and Chrome as well.
So I would very much like to have 16GB of ram (hell I would even want 32GB, but maybe that's too much), and especially now, that DDR3 is so cheap.

But, I don't really know what type of RAM and how much I can install in my system.

This is my system:
OS: Win 7 SP1 64 bit
MOBO: ASUS P5Q PRO
CPU: Q9450 @ 2.66GHz (stock speed)
GPU: Gigabyte gtx 660Ti windforce (stock speed)
RAM: G.skill DDR2 4096MB 800MHZ PI CL4-4-4-12 (this is what I have now)
PSU: SeaSonic M12II 500W

Like I said, I would like to buy 4x4gb ddr3 (it's dirty cheap),
but does my CPU / MOBO combination supports it?

Thank you in advance,
Bez.

Your motherboard only supports DDR2, other than that, I can find some for your system in a couple of minutes.

Your motherboard supports DDR2 NOT DDR3. Try to get RAMS that are for DDR2.

Hey guys, thank you,
When you say support, it means the speed, or I can't install at all DDR3 at all?
because if it's a matter of speed lost, I don't mind so much since it's cheaper than DDR2 anyway.

If I can't install DDR3 at all, than I guess I am a bit fu**ed.
Can I install 16 GB of DDR2 RAM, or 8GB is the max?

http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-PC2-6400F-Buffered-FB... $200

There is the most your motherboard can support, at the best speed you can get. It is your bus speed bottlenecking your performance on DDR2 past 1000MHz, not DRAM speed.

You cannot use DDR3 at all. That was 16gb by the way, the most that motherboard supports.

So no more than 16GB of DDR2 at 800Mhz, essentially.
Bummer, it's so much more expensive than DDR3 :(

Thank you very much.

It may be more economical to upgrade your motherboard and buy DDR3 DRAM, it could end up being the same price, with a performance boost to boot.

OK, another question if I may,
I can't seem to find anything in a reasonable price range,
So I am wondering if any of these would be compatible with my current RAM
so I would buy just another 2X2 and have 8 in total (better than 4)

It's just that I am not sure yet if I want to order from Ebay / amazon,
And also I am not sure what company this RAM you linked here, I want a good brand.

Sorry for the Hebrew link, but I guess you can see the type of RAM no problem

Thanks again.

A new MOBO would mean a new CPU as well, no? would that still be cheaper?
I am planning to buy a new PC altogether in the near future,
but I thought this PC can still be of use to me, and just upgrade the RAM on the cheap.

I would help, but I don't know what currency that is, so I can't tell what price it's asking you to pay. The Hebrew is fine otherwise.

Hey the price is OK for me, I am just wondering if any of these two
would be compatible with what I have now,
I have now: 2xG.skill DDR2 2048MB 800MHZ PI CL4-4-4-12

and what I found there is either:
2xG.Skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ
or
2xG.Skill F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B

the price, if you are interested, is about 100$ to any of them.
Thanks

Hey, thank you for the taking your time to help me,
I am not sure about a new MOBO, I don't really want to install the CPU myself and so on,
there is a limit to what I want to mess with :)

Yes, the DDR2 you have selected will be compatible, and its ok if you don't feel comfortable to remove your CPU to transfer it, especially if you plan to upgrade soon anyways.
