Hi,

I plant to replace my old 120GB hard disk with an 120GB solid state drive. The system is an Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, running Windows Xp SP3.
The idea was to just copy everything from the HDD to the SSD and continue using the laptop with faster boot times, loading times etc. The SSD I have in mind is the Kingston V300 120GB.

Is this feasible?

Another option would be to use Windows 7, but I would rather avoid that due to the poor system specifications.

First make sure the laptop has a sata port. Secondly, when you copy all the files to the SSD, there could be a 50/50% chance that it will not work because the laptop will know there is a different drive in there and it will have to find the drivers for that SSD and if it does work, the OS might not run stable.
I would recommend Doing a fresh Install on the new SSD THEN afterwards copy ONLY the necessary files from the HDD to SDD because the windows files aren't necessary.

Dear,

Ensure that your laptop has SATA port for SSD. Also due to the SSD architecture it is preferable to have a clkean install on it then copy files which you require from hdd to ssd.

Happy Hunting!

Thank you all for your advice and help.

I will try to install Windows Xp on the SSD, and then copy the files I need from the old HDD.
My primary concern is if Windows Xp SP3 will work on the SSD in my INSPIRON 6400.

Yes it will work. Don't worry dear.
