Or just be careful with your browsing habits and use MSE.

Norton Sucks! It seriously bogs down your machine!

You live in a time that business's are getting hacked like the Target debacle, look at that disaster and all the repercussions from it, and you want free security protection?

While Norton's protection might be lacking these days the performance of Symantec has improved greatly since 2011+

As for the best free Antivirus? I would suggest either avast! or Avira and have WinPatrol as a second line of defense.

Avast or MSE are very good if you are internet savvy.
Use Malwarebytes free combined with one.

MSE came with windows 8, its called something different but has the same function
