I have an i5 3570k, and 1 amd 290 sapphire tri-x GPU right now. I have a brand new, still in the case not used yet, 750 watt hx750 corsair psu. Could this psu run the two cards? I know PSU is very important but I also know people like to go overkill. Most sites and calculators I've seen put my system at 600-650 watts at full load. A review I read (for mining, though I am not mining) had these specific cards in a build getting to 630ish watts when mining.

Do I need to buy a bigger Psu when I decide to get another down the road, or will this PSU hold up? I don't overclock. I don't mine. I don't run furmark or other benchmarks. The sapphire 290 tri-x gets up to 290 watts by itself when on furmark, but maxes out at around 220 when gaming.

That's cutting it a little close. I have an ax1200i for 2 290x's which is overkill. I've seen a pre-built system with 2 290xs matched up to an 850 watt psu. I've seen my own system draw about 650 watts in litecoin mining (but the system was built for gaming and I don't coinmine anymore). So I imagine it could hit 800 watts if the gpus where maxed out at the same time as the cpu.

Odds are you'd be okay with 750 watts, but I if it were me I'd want to be certain, and I'd go up to 850 watts.

Yea that's what I am thinking. I bought the corsair a couple months ago, on sale, and have been kind of lazy about putting it in, but that turned into saving it for this crossfire set-up. So I didn't want to have to buy a new one, ya know? That's the only reason I am asking this.

(I wonder if anyone who frequents this forum has a similar setup, and what kind of draws they normally get.)

How does litcoin mining compare to gaming with power draws? I'm gaming at 1440p right now, eventually at 4k.

Just that mantle might cause a lot more gpu usage, and you might want to checkout those power usage benchmarks once they come out.

Yea I honestly didn't even think about that. Thanks for the responses bud.
Lets say I tried crossfiring two 290s on the hx750, what would happen if it couldn't handle the load? Just a shutdown? Or would it do damage to the PSU or any other components?

Odds are the hx750 is going to fail safely. Meaning it would probably just shut down. Here's a review that supports that:

They also say the unit can handle almost 900 watts

Wow that is stunning... Great news... I was starting to regret buying this hx750 but now I'll atleast give it a shot and see how it holds up.
