Hi,
I've been having this issue for some time now, and it's gotten worse since I got a second card for crossfire.
I get these strange lags/stutters whenever I'm playing a game.
For example: Tomb raider runs on a solid 30-40fps, but because of the stuttering it feels like I'm playing it on 5fps.
This happens in ALL games I have.
(Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYhDgYkplvk)
This is my Heaven benchmark:
Heaven Benchmark v3.0 Basic
FPS:
50.5
Scores:
1272
Min FPS:
15.4
Max FPS:
110.6
Solid numbers, but the bench felt like it was a 20FPS bench because of the stuttering.
My current hardware is as follows:
ASRock 970 Extreme3
AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 4ghz
8gb of Kingston RAM
Crossfire Club3D 7850 2GB, stock speed 910/1200
Asus Xonar 7.1 sound card
600w Cooler Master Silent Gold
I use MSI Afterburner to monitor my GPU usage and I use a windows widget (ALL CPU Meter) to monitor CPU usage.
During these stutters my CPU usage is never at 100%, and my GPU's aren't either. (Depends on the game though, I do see a lot of games that have 90-95% GPU usage.)
It SHOULD run fine, but it becomes unplayable instead.
My CPU core voltage is good, it's automatically set by the 'automatic' overclock. I only increased the multiplier.
My GPU core voltage should be good too, as it's stock.
Temperatures are good. CPU is max 50c, and GPU's are max. 65c.
Things I've already tried:
Removed drivers, reïnstalled latest drivers, BIOS update, disabling monitors (I run a 3 monitor setup), defragmentations, GPU clock speeds, pretty much every game, I haven't done a clean windows install yet, because I know it can't be that.
Any ideas? Help is greatly appreciated, I'm really frustrated things won't just work at the moment.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: The ONLY game that does run smoothly is Skyrim. Everything else is stuttering.
EDIT2: I'm on Win7 Ultimate x64.

13.12:
"Frame pacing support for multi-GPU configs. Note that the frame pacing implementation in this driver still doesn't work with resolutions above 2560x1600 unless you're running a Radeon R7 260X, R9 290, or R9 290X. Broader frame pacing support will arrive next month in a beta driver."
Edit: Gameplay footage is done processing. Here's the issue on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYhDgYkplvk

Here's the link:

You didn't notice the huge amounts of stuttering starting from 45 seconds? Because it definitely is there.
It's not smooth at all! And I set the graphics to 'high' instead of 'ultimate' which it should be able to run at.
EDIT: Just finished some more testing, single cards individually have no problems. Together they lag.

Thanks. Yes I see what the article is saying. But I assumed you weren't running at 2560x1600 rez. At lower rez it should work fine. It does for me anyway. But maybe I'm not as susceptible to m-s as you are. I still only see 1 possible stutter in your video. That is when she starts to run. After that, I must be immune to it.
Either way, it must be the m-s phenomena you are experiencing if it doesn't appear with a single card. So, if the beta driver doesn't do the trick for you, you may want to consider selling the HD 7850s and putting the money towards a single faster card.

Damn! I totally missed the fact that your MB's 2nd PCIe X16 slot is only X4 lanes. I'm an idiot. Yes, that would be my guess as to the poor performance of dual cards and the persistent m-s. I have had that happen with a MB I used to have with X16, X4 slots too. CF (and SLI) need a minimum of X8, X8 to function smoothly.
