Well...the specifics had to be determined before we moved on. Not to be rude...

If it was a valid Win 8, then upgraded to Win 8.1....all should be OK. Everything should run no problem.

What you should have done was make a Recovery of your original Win 8.
But since you didn't, if you want one, you'll probably have to buy it from whoever you bought the PC from.

Buying a recovery DVD from the manufacturer, for potential future use, is cheaper than buying a new Win 8 or 8.1 license.
But would have been free if you had done it when you got the PC.

i have talked to many people for support and they said in my predicument that the only way i can activate is to buy a new key proven by the countless people i talked too and all the hours i spent. since i upgrade and the things i did thats the only way

If the original Windows 8 was 'activated', upgrading to Windows 8.1 would not have deactivated it. I just did the 8.1 upgrade a few days ago.

What are you trying to do?

OK, here we go:

The licensing for Windows 8/8.1 is somewhat different than Windows 7.
It depends on how you obtained hte license.

Preinstalled by the manufacturer - that license is tied to that original PC. New motherboard = 'new' PC = new license needed
Bought and installed by you - You can change PC parts as you like, including the motherboard.

So....since you changed the motherboard, that constitutes a 'new' PC. And as such, you'll need a new license.

You can read the specific license agreements here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/IntellectualProperty/UseTerms/Default.aspx

It will probably start to reboot once an hour.
It will probably revert to a black background, instead of a normal desktop picture.
Unknown what other effects it may have. But they won't be good.

I have windows 8.1 pro installed and updated winver.exe reports the build version as 6.3 (build 9600)

basically, you can get a copy of windows 8 from microsoft just by downloading it
but you don't have rights to use it until you enter in a proper key.
if windows is not activated, it will start to nag you to activate,

- personalization settings will be disabled
- every 6 hours or so you will get a full screen request to activate windows-
- system restore is disabled
- will not be able to download from the windows store
- some time later, week,or month? windows will only work for a hour at a time, just so you can still activate it.

I don't know if it will block you from getting windows updates. My guess is they don't block updates.
