Hello friends,

I would like to raise a very interesting question here in this forum.

I have a Corsair Tx 650W in my rig, and my components are :

M5A78L-M LX
AMD FX 6300
4GB Kingston RAM
1TB HDD
320 GB Laptop HDD
Nvidia GTX 460

I just want to know if my energy consumption will reduce if my pc remains idle.

Or is it a better practice to shutdown every time its not in use.

Thanks so much guys.

If you are not running intensive apps your PC will use less power than if you are, if you are doing nothing it will go down to Idle power, probably a bit under 90W for your system. If you put it to sleep it will consume just enough to keep the motherboard, CPU, and RAM barely awake, probably about 30W. If you hibernate it you will be at effectively 0W. If you shut it down you will be at effectively 0W.

Don't tease me with tags like "tricky" :/

If you have "Cool n Quiet" enabled, you power consumption will go way down at idle 80---90watts....

If you system is in Sleep Mode, <1 watt (I've check on a Kill-A-Watt meter, handy item for $20...)

OFF is about the same, <1watt is hard to accurately read... but 0.5watts or so...

so are you asking it your PC will use more power switched on than switched off? I agree the question is tricky so I'm only guessing switched off uses less. Someone with more knowledge might know better.
