ACHI What does it mean? and why?

I see the Term AHCI used here every once in a while. I have been out of building systems for a while and don't recognize the term. What is it? Why Should I care?

    Advanced Host Control Interface, and it controls Serial ATAs, so if you use any kind of SATA drive, you will need to enable AHCI in the BIOS.
