Hey

Im building a pc from scratch and its time to decide on a motherboard. I was going to get the Asus Maximus VI Hero. but my mates told me that this is a bit overkill since i dont overclock much and i generally wouldnt need it. My second choice is the MSI Z87-GD65 GAMING Motherboard. From what ive heard its not as reliable and just a general downgrade. but it also costs a wad of money less. i need opinions as to which one i should get. is the VI Hero worth the money?

Thanx for all your help guys :)

your mates would be kinda right depending on what you need; the Asus, at least, should come with quality parts, though from what i can see via a quick look on google image, comes with an 8+2 power phase design over MSI's 10+2. however, call it bias, i'm personally somewhat skeptical of MSI's quality as they haven't been up to par since Sandy Bridge based on the accounts of some personal acquaintances.

but if you're not doing any intensive OCing, the MSI would do just fine. even Asrocks' Z87 Extreme4 make for a decent board for a mild OC.

well i dont want my processor to die early. so i dont want to go much higher than 4Ghz i dont think. the rig wont do much more than gaming. a bit of this and that as well. if everyone says the hero is overkill and msi is poor quality, what other motherboards are there that have decent performance and have a red theme?

No one said the Hero is overkill. I think it would be a good fit to your system, considering its a very high-end build. You should never skimp on motherboards.
