I have a reference AMD Sapphire 290X and I was wondering if it would be possible to crossfire it with Sapphire's non-reference Tri-X OC 290X? Would this cause problems or would I be better off selling the Reference card and paying the difference to get 2 of the same model 290X's?

Yes, all that matters is that the bus size is the same IIRC.
Even on nVidia, it's not the cooler that matters, just the card underneath.

By memory it underclocks the faster card to match the slower. You could also overclock the slower one.
