Hi All

I am having some serious trouble trying to get Windows 7 to recognise my second hard drive. I've recently just finished building my first computer, so far all has been ok. I've just installed the OS on my SSD and have now installed a second HDD which I'll use to store my data. However I can't get Windows to 'see' that I have a new hard drive installed. Is there anything I'm meant to do post build regarding the second hard drive? Many thanks for any help!!

Very good article but I seem to keep falling over at this very point. When I get to step 3 (via the computer management method) I keep getting an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I've done the following but still keep getting the message at that point:

- Changed the SATA port the HDD was connected to
- Tried different SATA and Power cables
- Updated the driver
- Tried a different HDD (I have 2 fresh ones, both getting the same error)

I've restarted the computer at each point but still no luck.

Which partition style are you using? And what edition of windows are you working with here?

Also, do me a favor and try doing it through CMD - that might work where disk management is throwing up errors, even though it's executing the same commands.

Will try that now, I'm working with Windows 7 Professional x64. Would I still type 'format quick fs=ntfs' or would I need to type something like 'fat32' (probably sounding really dense to someone who knows what they are doing, but I want to make sure I get it right! :) )

EDIT: Just tried it and getting the same I/O error when I type "create partition primary"

EDIT: Found out what the issue was. I ran a test on the HDD to find it has completely failed (which is a bit annoying considering it's a brand new one), will get it returned and go for a different make. Many thanks for the advice DakSable, will use the guide you posted when the new HDD comes through.
