Hello!

I got my new WD 1TB My Passport Ultra delivered 2 days ago. I first ran a SeaTools Short DST and it passed. Then I ran Short Generic and it FAILED.

Then, to be sure, I ran a QUICK TEST and then a long EXTENDED TEST on Data Lifeguard Diagnostic by WD. It passed both!

Then, I used WD's new "WD Drive Utilities" for both QUICK and COMPLETE Drive tests. And again, it passed both!

I finally ran Windows chkdsk for bad sectors as well, and it passed again without a problem.

I ran Short Generic of SeaTools and it failed again.

Its not finished yet. I hear a peculiar not-exactly-clicking type sound in it as well. One hears it ONLY when you're writing data or reading data, otherwise its silent (when its idle -not in sleep though).

Here is a link to the sound that I hear: https://soundcloud.com/user613252671/sets/wd-1tb-my-pas...
Sorry for the poor recording quality

Just to mention, I have checked this sound against a few known sounds of failure (available on youtube) and it doesn't match. However, I have not found such a sound on any of the 5 external HDDs I have (1 WD My Book 2TB, 1 WD My Passport 1TB, 2 Seagate GoFlex 1TB, 1 Seagate GoFlex 500GB) except one. I have a WD My Book 3TB which is making such sounds for a long time and working absolutely fine. And, in fact, its louder. Still, I am afraid that I might lose it sometime sooner than the others. I am not sure if such a sound is a problem.

To summarize: SeaTools' failed Short Generic AND Weird Sound.

Should I ask for a replacement? (for the new one)

Sorry for such a long text. :p

Thanks in advance!

Hi, The sound u are hearing is the arm reading the platters/ editing data on the platters. that's why when it is in idle you don't hear anything as the arm isn't moving as it doesn't need to move because it isn't reading or editing data.

hope this helped.

Thanks for your answer!

I understand, but there is no such problem with the other drives. Only this is making such a peculiar noise.

So, how can it not be a problem?
