How to get more Case Fans

From looking at the newegg details, the ASUS SABERTOOTH Z87 mobo supports 4 case fans and two assistant fans. Is there any way, perhaps using a Y- adapter to get more case fans? And if that does work, will a pair of fans plugged in via a Y adapter be detected as one? And also, what is an assistant fan? I'm assuming it's just a fan without PWM.

1. Yes, you use a splitter. Or a fan controller.
2. It is for motherboard fans. Presumably you could use it for anything you want, but you would want to check the rating on it first as it may be lower than the regular fan headers (1 amp).
Pretty sure a Y adapter works, you wouldn't be able to change each fans PWM individually though. You could always just use a molex connector then 12v/7v/5v mod it as needed.

Need to be careful with y adapters and powerful fans, they could easily burn out the mobo fan header.
