I'm sure this question has been asked before but I really need a clear answer here.

I'm about to upgrade my processor from a Pentium G860 to an i5 3570k. (already bought).
My motherboard is an Msi h61m-p31(g3).

On Live updater 5 it says my current bios version is 2.5 and the online version is 2.7.

Should I update my bios before installing the new cpu or will it work without the bios update?

The motherboard supports the processor alright but i don't know whether it needs the latest bios version or not.

(yes i'm aware i can't overclock with this motherboard).

Also, if i do have to update my bios should i do it with live update 5 (I heard bad things about it) or should i go the usb, bios way?

Also, if i have to go the usb way, could you explain it step-by-step please or give me a link to somewhere that shows this clearly?

Thanks,

Robin

Current Specs:
cpu: Pentium G860
graphics: XFX Radeon HD 7850 2gb
motherboard: MSI H61m-P31(G3)
OS: Windows 7 OEM 64-bit
PSU: Corsair builder series (i think) 500W Bronze certified
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000
HDD: Seagate something something 500gb

Solution

Just remove the old cpu and put in the new one, that's it. No driver needed.

ok, so no bios update needed? I can literally just remove the old processor and put in the new one and it will work perfectly?
Is there any new drivers to install or anything like that?

Newer BIOS updates will state reasons for updating (flashing) the BIOS. This is done by going to the motherboard manufacturer's website and each manufacturer will clearly state how this should be done. Follow their instructions.

BIOS updates are usually to fix bugs or to offer support for newer hardware such as newer graphics cards (with newer graphics cards, drivers also may be required).

I have been to the manufacturers website and there are instructions on how to flash it but there is also a warning saying "Do not flash if your system is running fine".

In my case, does a cpu upgrade warrant a bios flash?
I won't know if I need to flash my bios until after I install my new cpu. (without your help that is).
I need to flash my bios with my current processor before I install the new one because I don't have thermal paste to re-install my current processor after I take it out.

Just remove the old cpu and put in the new one, that's it. No driver needed.

Solution

Install the new CPU. The manufacturer's response is right. If the computer runs fine do not flash the BIOS. In your case you need not flash the BIOS at this point.

If the motherboard supports the new cpu (which yours does) and it is running fine now you don't need to flash the bios. Remember the old saw " If it ain't broke don't fix it"
