Has anyone tried swapping a windows 7 HDD into another computer/same make and model/ and worked? Or is it possible with win7?

I have two systems same make and model running windows 7. One system has died and that is the one that has info we need off the HDD.
The other one works.
I have done this with windows xp, but not with windows 7 machines.
Wondering if anyone has tried this and if so does it just work like XP or is there more to this.

Thanks,
Ben

If the other computer carries another motherboard, it's probable that Windows becomes non-genuine. That's a problem since when you try to activate Windows it will tell you that you can't since that code it's already been use by your other computer.

Thanks for the quick response, but I am looking for an answer from some one who has done this.
I know they should work, but I have not done this with windows 7 as the os.
Just want to make sure my swap goes smoothly and with out issue.

This is one thing I dont want to encounter since activating issues can cause other issues. These machines as far as I know are identical, since they where purchased at the same time and we purchased three of them at the same time.
But then again even if the same model they may have different components.

Thanks for your response.

Alright, you should look for things(hardware) such as your motherboard and so. That determines whether or not the drivers install on that HDD matches your new system. If it does, then there should be no problem.

OK thanks guys I think I have a few things to try out.
I will swap it out and see what happens.
Will come back and choose closet answer that by my outcome.

thanks again guys for your quick response and suggestions.

I can attest as well that if the components are all the same, there is no real issue with swapping hard drives.
I did this to 75 computers between November and January, as part of an enterprise deployment using a master image and imaging the hard drives. No issues from hardware (maybe some issues have imaging the master 75 times though)

Ok so the solution was to just swap it with machine of the same model and config.
I did not receive any errors or activation prompts. So I take that as you can swap an HDD with windows 7 to another system with the same model and config to be "error free".
Thanks every one for your help and assistance.
